air bag deployment

Ok so Tiger Woods junks up his Escalade. I'm sure looking at the front of this thing the airbags should of deployed but they didn't.

Anyone know what it actually takes to get a bag deployed? How do the sensors in the front bumped measure and how is it determined if its hard enough of a crash?

If I remember right, if you hit some types of wood, the airbag sensors don't register it.

it's like an accelerometer... the contacts close so fast to tell the computer how hard the impact is. it uses that data to decide whether or not fire off the SRS. usually, an air bag discriminator is on out to about 35-degrees off center. that's why air bags don't always go off if there is a collision.

30 mph minimum, but it has to trigger all three frontal sensors as well.
Basically the sensors are activated by G force - generally a ball bearing is secured to a rare earth magnet in the middle of the sensor, releasing and completing a circuit on impact. The SRS module has a ton of different variables that control whether or not to see the bag off- vehicle speed, decelration speed, seatbelt on/off, etc, etc, etc. It looks to have been a pretty low speed crash... he just managed to hit all the wrong things in the wrong places.

ill have to agree ive hit some stuff and done damage with no airbag deployment, in a low speed crash the airbags could do more damage than help

It seems that there's a fair amount of front end damage to poor Tiger's 'Lade. I know they are meant to crumble/fold to absorb impaot but seems excessive.

Thanks for the info bandi on the parameters of airbag deployment. I figured there was some sort of crazy computer math going on beyond just oops i hit something "DEPLOY"

GM full size pickups have a recall happening right now... the carpet padding above the SRS module retains moisture and causes corrosion on the module. Anyhow, it's a really simple recall, but one customer did have his seatbelt pretensioners fire off while driving. He said he thought someone shot at him, then everything got tight.

lol my buddy is a tech at futureshop, he was installing speakers in the door of a G35, for some reason the side airbag wires didnt have yellow tape on them, he was testing all the wires. Long story short, there was a huge explosion, the windows blew out, and he got a concussion and temporary deafness.

i've seen that... my brother had one of those in his bay for replacement.
they also had an older Buick Regal/Century (1997, 98, something like that) where the woman was driving the car and the air bag just deployed... just boom! DEATHBAG IN YOUR FACE, BITCH!
Engineers from GM came and took that car...
She got a shiny new Buick.

I thought it was just the sensor itself that had to be bright yellow. I seem to remember one of my techs having a front end all torn apart and the sensors were yellow but I don't recall same for wiring

I was doing HVAC work for a customer (around 99) and he had a new extended cab Toyota Tacoma. We were unloading the van and noticed that both airbags were deployed but the truck wasn't damaged. I was talking with the homeowner and he said he had the truck for a week, pulled into the driveway and was gettin groceries out (had them between the seats in the extended cab part dunno why) and he said while he was getting a bag out a can of something fell out and hit some kinda plastic box? Said he heard a boom and the bag hit him in the side. Had no idea what happened. Called the dealer and they said leave it there and don't touch it. The next day some guys came out and looked over the truck (the day before we got there) and told him that what happened wasn't possible. He asked them if warranty was covering it. They told him leave the truck where it is, get all personal effects out of it BUT leave the can in it (?). A few weeks later we were doing a follow up ( we would come back after a install to check things out, kinda like a courtesy thing and to make sure there were no problems) and he had a brand new full size toyota truck there. I asked him if it was a rental (just kinda shootin the shit) and he said nope, they paid off the tacoma and GAVE him this truck if he would just drop it. Thought that was the least they could do myself, since he could have probably sued lol. Anyone ever hear of that? Is there a sensor in/on the floor of an extended cab Tacoma? I never got to really look inside the truck except for glancing, and other than the ext cab it was pretty much base lookin. I have always wondered about that. BTW I HATE airbags. Only time I have had a injury in a car wreck was because of the damned thing.

At one of the major radio service shops here in Portland, one of the techs was doing antenna wiring and well, he didn't catch on the paperwork the car has curtain airbags mounted on the front pillars, so when he removed the bezel and started to unscrew a few bolts....BAM!

there isn't a recall here... just a TSB. If you have problems, they'll fix it/replace it for free.
