my 2001 sunfire GT has gone to the big parking lot in the sky. Water pump gone and its too big a job to justify the cost. I have on the horizon a 2003 cavalier for 3000$ with only 90 000k. anyone have any opinions on the 2.2l ecotec?

2.2 ecotec, its boring, its slow, it sounds like shit, but its easy to work on and gets descent gas mileage

changing a water pump on a 2.2L OHV engine is maybe a 20 minute job. what gives? the Ecotec is a very reliable engine. In the larger cars, like the Malibu, the horsepower was compromised a bit, but in the Cavalier, Sunfire and Cobalt, it was a decent performer. My 2.2L L61 in my 05 Cobalt turned in 38-44mpg on a road trip to McMinnville TN and back. Oil changes are a snap on these cars and they've been out long enough where there are enough parts laying around just in case.

The N/A version is pretty uninspiring to drive... but they last. I have a Sunfire that comes in here with 480,000 on the clock with an Ecotec. Some have had head gasket issues, but most problem cars have been taken care of by now.
hi i like cars | |
thanks, no sam its the 2.4 in my sunfire, the water pump (i changed it myself a few years back) is a bitch to change you got to undo the exhaust manifold and a whole pile of shit, as well i know my timing chain is in need of changeing, its just not worth putting any money on a 2001 with no high beams, no defroster, 3 out of 4 dead speakers, no parking brake, no power steering... i figure i can have the sunfire around for a few months for parts and this is a pretty good deal on the cavalier, i just wasnt sure of the ecotec. And like i said, its only for the winter. My grand prix is the summer car.

yeah, the 2.4L TC is a boat anchor and douche to change out the waterpump. Point taken.

and since the cars mileage is so high and its on its original head gasket, i dont think its worth investing in

as much as I hate to agree with you, yeah, it's better to part ways now.

well i got the cavalier, wow, immpeccable. Brutally bone stock. its got cruise and AC as options. quite the change from my loaded sunfire. Ive already transplanted my sunvisors (silly i know) because of the vanity mirrors, the rear view mirror with the reading lights have also been transplanted. the cavalier is probably gonna get the intermittant wipers too. one interesting quirk, the trunk has a release solenoid! and its wired into the harness, i have to find the other end of the wires so i can pop the trunk from in the drivers seat!
