Saw this movie the day after seeing GI Joe, and it really reinforced:
- How good a movie can be when the people behind it are creative
- How a big budget can ruin a movie
- How there are still original ideas out there
- How good District 9 really was and how bad GI Joe was.

District 9 is on my must see list while on vacation.

District 9 starts out great but sort of decompresses as it goes. Entertaining, yes. But I wasn't fully blown away as the first third was leading me to be. I was saddened that a critical interview with Wikus and the main prawn from the trailer was NOT included in the movie itself.

Agreed, very thought provoking and visceral.
I like that Wikus, in his alien transformation, became more human as well.
Different sides of the political field won't like the portrayal of the military, government contracts, and humanitarian groups, but that's pretty much how they operate. No heroes here.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. When I first saw the preview months ago, I thought the whole scene in Africa made it look like a good political movie, but when it cut to the insect-like alien I burst out laughing. I thought it was going to be another Michael Bay-like, mind-numbing, visual catastrophe. I was wrong though, and was very happy about it.

The whole problem I had is that it seemed like Peter Jackson was going for some kind of message and he was very dark about it, brooding almost and by the end of the movie...I couldn't find the message.
I'm sure it was there, I just couldn't find it. Otherwise, it was a good story, pretty creative and different and the documentary thing was what someone can do with that sort of thing without remaking the Cloverfield mistake all over again.
I just hope that they make some kind of attempt to tell us what happens when the mothership returns, 3 years later.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. Like he kinda got lost within that darkness. Haha Cloverfield was such a mess. One of the few movies that literally made me feel nauseous and I'm almost uncertain whether it was from the terrible camera work or just the movie itself being a monstrosity

I think Jackson was going for the message that humankind despite having the best interests in doing the right thing can still fuck it all up. On top of that, one of the more obvious themes was how there is a balance between 'good' and 'evil'... it was very much a social commentary, and the ultimate irony of having it set in South Africa was novel and the perfect setting for the concept.
personally, i enjoyed the film and really thought it was pretty damn good.
i say see it yourself and glean your own messages from it.

I finally watched this, and agree that the start of the movie is the best part. I loved the documentary, matter-of-fact style, and all the allusions to some dreadful incident to come.
It's not that the movie ended badly, but I think I'd have been happier if he'd been drawn to the aliens' side in some understandable but unforgivable way, rather than undergoing the physical transformation. He might have become one of them without literally becoming one of them, if you know what I mean. Then again, maybe the physical transformation was meant as a metaphor for the progress of cultural understanding. Deep, man.
Well worth watching!

Watched District 9 a while ago (on Rogers-On-Demand) and I thought it was an ok movie (nothing spectacular). I'd give it a 5/10.
