San Diego Reader article - They Carry Guns

I'm new to this private board, and I'll have more to say later, but I figured that a lot of you might find this to be rather interesting (link found on OpenCarry.org)...

"They Carry Guns

By Rosa Jurjevics | Published Wednesday, July 15, 2009

It’s a beautiful day in Pacific Beach as Nate approaches the bronze pelican statue on the boardwalk. He’s slight and blond, spectacled and clad in jeans and an army-green T-shirt. He squints. The sun’s so bright overhead that he is prompted to spray a fine mist of sunblock over his fair skin to stave off a burn.

I’ve never met Nate before, but I know it’s him (a) because I’ve seen his picture and (b) due to the handgun that sits on a holster against his hip. I’m about to get up from where I’m sitting and introduce myself when someone else beats me to the punch. A scraggly-looking beachgoer, a man of indeterminable age because he is so weather-beaten, approaches."

The rest of the article is here...

Good read.
Did not know you could open carry in that manner in CA.
Good to know.

Good Article.

Nevada & Arizona you can open carry.

I see it quite alot in AZ.

Its easier than hell to get a CCW in Nevada. You just have to pass the class.

Do Nevada residents have a better understanding of their open carry law than California residents have of theirs, and do people in Nevada also have to carry unloaded?

CCW I know you can carry loaded but none in the chamber.

As far as open carry, I believe you can carry loaded as well(nothing in chamber) but I could be wrong.

A few buddies of mine open carry loaded...

edit:

Open Carry
In Nevada, you may carry a loaded or unloaded firearm on your person without a permit so long as the firearm is fully exposed (known as "open carry"). An example of open carry is when a handgun is carried in an "outside the pants" hip holster. Full or partial concealment (such as a purse, jacket, etc.) is considered "concealed carry" and is discussed below.

During the "Civil Rights Era" 100s of openly armed black militants stormed the California State Capital building demanding equal rights under law.
Good for them.
CA QUICKLY outlawed open-carry.

Are you sure of that? I never saw any mention of carrying without one in the chamber here in VA (I really am interested in knowing, dont want to come off sounding like a douche). I personally concealed carry with one in the chamber. The way I see it every second counts. And though that slide and click may sound intimidating its a huge waste of time in a real life or death defensive situation. not to mention that is one less bullet you have to defend yourself with. And on the same note I think open carry unloaded is stupid as fuck. Your not only letting a would be attacker KNOW you have a weapon, your letting them know you dont even have one in the chamber or in the mag, all your bullets are in your pocket? I really think open carry in general is a bad idea. Once again, a bad guy walks in to scope the place out, he sees you have a gun on your hip, your automatically his first target. The only way to go is concealed. Now if only they could make concealed carry available for every law abiding citizen in every state willing to go through the training.

Sorry for the run-on sentence and poor grammar choice.

He lives in CA - laws there vary from county to county and city to city. I would not ever begin to untangle that mess in this forum.
Looks like you live South of me in VA.
Yes - you MAY carry a loaded concealed pistol if you have a valid CCW permit.
Yes - you MAY carry a loaded UNconcealed pistol just about anywhere in the state.

Ok thank you! I thought that was how it was here but just wanted to be sure. Come to think of it ive had a cop ask me to check my gun at a DUI checkpoint one time and he didnt say anything about it being loaded with one in the chamber (I told him this before I handed him the gun) And I agree I wouldnt want to get into a discussion over gun laws in Cali. I thought about getting a job there until I thought about all their crazy gun laws!

Not to be a dick but: If you took the mandatory CCW safety course, you should know this.

Didnt need to. I took the hunter safety course when I was like 10. And in my county (Hanover) that is all you need. Didnt even have to be fingerprinted.

You're authorized to carry concealed with just a hunter safety course that you took when you were 10? How old are you now, and are you sure that it's still valid for CCW?

Im 22. And not just because of the course but When I mailed in the paperwork and the paperwork fee I had to send a copy of my hunter safety education certificate and a few months later they sent me a letter and my concealed? Im pretty sure our county is one of the few in VA that do that but we have a really low crime rate and a lot of the county is still fairly rural. I dont know that any of that has anything to do with it but thats all I can guess?

Again, not to be a dick but: CCW permit or not - if you're carrying a lethal weapon, you really should go take some relevant coursework.
If you have to ask - "Can I carry this loaded?" - you probably aught not.
Carrying a gun is one thing.
Knowing how to use it is another altogether.
Go do yourself, friends, family, and the general public a service and take some CCW and practical/tactical pistol classes.
What a chore - DevilC just told you to go spend a few weekends shooting 1000s of rounds.

Hey just cause I didnt know that one little thing doesnt mean I am in danger while carrying lol. And I know its safe to carry it loaded just didnt know for sure if it was legal, hadnt ever crossed my mind before the other day (Honestly i'd probably carry with one in the chamber regardless of whether it was legal or not). I do know where I can and cant carry, and have a list of states that share reciprocity with Va. and as far as guns go I dont need any training there (not that I would turn down any). Ive put more rounds through more guns than I care to count and know everything I need to know safety-wise about guns especially my carry pistol. Believe me im not one of the retards that gets a CCW permit goes and buys a $150 pistol puts a couple mag's through it and then puts it on his side and thinks hes "ready".

And I realize your not being a dick and actually appreciate your concern since I do know theres people out there that may not be very well informed. I personally think my county is a little too lenient.

A .45 is not considered broken in until 3000 rounds have run through it . . .
That said.
Ammo expended does not equal training.
You need to drill and prepare.
Shooting @ the range does not focus you to draw that weapon in a stressful situation and trade lead with assholes.
You need to make more than a few actions muscle memory and rehearse your behavior.
Does everyone do that?
Nope.
But since you brought up the matter - I insist.

Agreed. And I don't shoot at the range. I shoot on my family and friends farms at varying distances with multiple targets including moving targets. Granted I don't do this as much as I used to due to the price of ammo and my current financial status. I do work on my draw, posture, and shooting techniques occasionally but no, Ive never had any kind of stressful situation training but really the only thing that stresses me out is women lol. And we don't need to go mixing women, stress, and guns now do we ;)

If anyone is willing to donate the cost of a tactical training class I will more than gladly participate in one! Right now Im jobless with a baby on the way so guns and shooting have fallen pretty low on my to-do list.

mastering a semiauto in a combat situation is a hell of a task. I doubt many CCW holders are really highly skilled at it. Hell, I doubt most soldiers or cops are.

Probably PMC, SOF and Police tactical team members are the only people with the time and money and facilities to really master it. I've gone though 40,000 10mm 10,000 9x19 and 20,000 .22 though this fiscal year....I love tax payer money.

But it doesnt hurt to take a tactical pistol course.

10mm ammo? From what have you fired it, if I may ask?

A glock 20, MP5/10 and an AR-15 with a 10mm upper made by a now defunct company called Olympic arms and Tangolio Force. (A CZ-75 rechambered for 10mm and made in Italy..I found it too heavy and a bit wide/big for my hand) MP5/10 is fucking awesome, but only got to play with that in the US and the FBI's HRT.

the AR-15 with the modded upper is kind of crappy. the mags are shit and I'd rather just a 5.56mm out of an assault rifle anyways. But it was fun to try.
