so i have a 1997 dodge intrepid, 3.3L V6, ~190,000 miles, i got it 4 years ago for $2300, its been a very good car, always changed the oil, took care of it
recently i had every thing down to the valve covers rebuilt, new plugs, wires...
i finished paying for school, so i got a new(er) car last week and i dont know what to with my old one
it still runs well, but it has some sort a knocking coming from the engine which just started, so i dont think it will be easy to sell for much
body is good with no rust, tires may need to be replaced, the really funny thing is that the transmission is still working awesome
i want something for it because it still runs but i dont know how much, one of my friends told me that some junk yards with pay for the car if it runs, but i havnt been able to find one, and i dont really want to donate because it still works well
so what do you think i should do with the car?

If you didn't put much in repairs, you did very well, and bought it cheap. That's actually the better engine than the 3.0 Mitsubitchi that the Minivans sometimes had. (The 3.3 or 3.8 were options) To be fair, my parents '94 3 litre is doing fine although the mileage is low.
Chrysler bragged about the 'cab forward' design with the Intrepid, Concorde etc. and it actually was a good design, but (sorry) Honda did the short sloped hood thing years before. Still these cars were well designed, but quite bad usually in reliability.
Depending on your income, you could donate it to NPR. The Cartalk show always advertises this. (Click and Clack, the tappet Brothers from Cambridge MA.) it will then get auctioned off, and you will get a tax receipt. If your income is not above a certain amount, you could transfer ownership to parents or a friend, someone you trust, who has more income, then they could give you maybe a third or whatever cash of what they get in a tax receipt. i think i put a total of $3000 into if you included the 2 sets of tires and two accidents, but yea, that sounds like a really good idea, im going to look into it, also i found a a salvage yard about 45 miles away that might take it, i will keep you updated and keep the ides coming

personally, since you live in Wisconsin, I would keep the car for a winter beater, or a knockaround car, something to drive on shitty days that you really don't give a shit about. Most salvage yards don't give a fuck if the car runs or not; they go on tonnage. Right now, with the price of scrap steel at $60-70 a ton, that car is maybe worth $150 to them.
The noise coming from the engine could be anything from a connecting rod to something stupid like a power steering pump (laugh, when the pump went on my 81 Regal 3.8L, it sound like the crank was falling out of the engine!). I say keep it and drive the shit out of it until it explodes. One of the worst things about an older used car is that you might have a shitload of money into it, but the guy buying it doesn't give a shit about that. To him, it's an old Intrepid that someone is selling.

ill call my insurance company tomorrow and see what they say, it would be nice to have a winter beater so i wouldn't really have to risk someone sliding through and intersection and hitting the caliber i just spent $8k on
if i go that way how often should i drive it to keep it running, or would it be enough to start it once a week and let it run for a bit (10 min or so)?
i had a 1985 celebrity (my first car) that sat for 5 months before i got it, it ran for 3 months then the brakes lines and the engine exploded (at about the same time)

best thing to do would be to drive it a couple of times a week, over 20 miles would be best. That allows the engine and transmission enough time to come up to temperature... keeps the seals from drying out.

First... strip all of the Chrysler logos, put some Fiat logos on it ... THEN abandon it. Imagine the confusion in 20 years when next generation explorers find it

OKAY! so my insurance company said it will cost $45 per 6 months for comprehensive only, but i cant really (legally) drive it in that time, so i will just do some weekly preventive maintenance on it and hope that it doesnt die in a the 6 months before the next snow fall
i think running it weekly will help it a lot, as well as checking and changing fluids, also do you think i should pull be the battery between startups?
