What kind of ammo is this?

I posted this question elsewhere, but nobody seemed to have any ideas...

I was out at an abandonment the other day and kept finding what appear to be strange shell casings. I know this spot was used by ETF (Toronto SWAT) for training purposes (breeching and hostage rescue). I do not know if these were left by them or not. They seem rather unconventional, as they 'extend' by about 10.5 mm. The casing is 9mm and if it held a bullet it would have been about 4mm - 5mm in diameter based on the opening. The only designation is on the primer and all it says is "E".

Has anyone seen these before or know what they are from?

They are training rounds.

The banded piece of spent brass (your 2nd pic) is just a .223/5.56mm blank for an AR-15 series weapon.
The unusual one with the sliding case and the gigantic primer are "simunitions."
The slidey cased .223/5.56mm round is a "Man Marker" from UTM.
They're really expensive paintball rounds that are fired from a standard service weapon.

The reason the base primer looks so large is because it's actually a .22 blank that drives the sabot containing the paint out of the barrel.

I really appreciate the update. Actually all pics were of the same cartridge, just manually collapsed and extended. Upon closer inspection of the UTM site and cartridge opening, it seems that this may be the UTM MMR or TBR, MMR being paint and the TBR being a lethal training round. I checked the dimensions for standard 5.56 on wiki and its pretty close. That really does validate some of the other destruction I saw in the place..
Seems the cartridge extension mechanism is to allow for recycling of the weapon under lower projectile propellent forces.

Thanks again!
B

Yep, that is a training round case for .223.

My friend used to train at blackwater and came back with a few.

I come into spent Simmunition a lot in abandoned places.

I posted an item in the UE Encyclopedia about this and provided a link to the official site and it got deleted.
