The coming evangelical collapse

"The coming evangelical collapse

An anti-Christian chapter in Western history is about to begin. But out of the ruins, a new vitality and integrity will rise.

Oneida, Ky. - We are on the verge – within 10 years – of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity. This breakdown will follow the deterioration of the mainline Protestant world and it will fundamentally alter the religious and cultural environment in the West.

Within two generations, evangelicalism will be a house deserted of half its occupants. (Between 25 and 35 percent of Americans today are Evangelicals.) In the "Protestant" 20th century, Evangelicals flourished. But they will soon be living in a very secular and religiously antagonistic 21st century.

This collapse will herald the arrival of an anti-Christian chapter of the post-Christian West. Intolerance of Christianity will rise to levels many of us have not believed possible in our lifetimes, and public policy will become hostile toward evangelical Christianity, seeing it as the opponent of the common good.

Millions of Evangelicals will quit. Thousands of ministries will end. Christian media will be reduced, if not eliminated. Many Christian schools will go into rapid decline. I'm convinced the grace and mission of God will reach to the ends of the earth. But the end of evangelicalism as we know it is close. "

Sounds like "House cleaning" for Christianity.

Most of the ministries (especially the ones on TV) are just scams put in place to rip off people who are vulnerable. They make me sick and I'll be glad to see them gone.

Like other religions, Christianity will survive and continue to flourish. Just like a house. Junk builds up, place starts to get run down. Clear out the junk, repair the damage and the house is once again liveable.

Interesting.
All valid points.
Balance is important.
We, as Americans, are at our best when we have balance in all things.
A conservative for every liberal / a hawk for every dove.
Sad to see that go out the window one way or another.

True there. And when the scale is tipped too far in one direction, forces act to push it back to keep the balance.

Could be. Who knows. I believe it's doing fine presently.

edit: I do believe that hostility toward Christianity will increase as time goes on. As for whether drastic changes will occur in the next 10 years... *shrug.*

Well, it's about time. I'm going to get some popcorn and watch this thing burn down.

Sam says it a little better:

"Most people believe that the Creator of the universe wrote (or dictated) one of their books. Unfortunately, there are many books that pretend to divine authorship, and each makes incompatible claims about how we all must live. Despite the ecumenical efforts of many well-intentioned people, these irreconcilable religious commitments still inspire an appalling amount of human conflict.

In response to this situation, most sensible people advocate something called "religious tolerance." While religious tolerance is surely better than religious war, tolerance is not without its liabilities. Our fear of provoking religious hatred has rendered us incapable of criticizing ideas that are now patently absurd and increasingly maladaptive. It has also obliged us to lie to ourselves — repeatedly and at the highest levels — about the compatibility between religious faith and scientific rationality." Sam Harris

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. The evangelical movement in this country is collapsing in on itself due to its lack of divine authority. Alternately, the Catholic Church has seen a huge resurgence in membership, vocations and apologetics practiced by the faithful, despite ever increasing attacks on the Church from all directions. There have even been huge portions of protestant congregations which have followed their pastor into Church membership:
