Time for me to buy from Springfield... what should I get?
< on 1/11/2009 1:59 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
I am considering getting the Springfield XD9842 and the XDM9212. Anyone have
any comments about these? What about in comparison to Springfield's other XD
offerings? What about in comparison to the 1911-A1's?

Here is the short list I am considering (unfortunately, at the moment, this is
all I can consider at this time):

PB9108LP - 1911-A1, Mil Spec. 5" barrel, Parkerized, .45ACP
PI9240LP - 1911-A1, EMP 3" Barrel, Bi-Tone Stainless/Black, .40S&W
PW9108LP - 1911-A1, GI 45, 5" Barrel, Parkerized, .45ACP
PW9151LP - 1911-A1, GI 45, 5" Barrel, Stainless, .45ACP
XD9102 - XD Service, 4.05" Barrel, Black, .40S&W
XD9202 - XD Service, 4.05" Barrel, OD Green, .40S&W
XD9402 - XD Tactical, 5.01" Barrel, Black, .40S&W
XD9621 - XD Tactical, 5.01" Barrel, Black, 45ACP
XD9622 - XD Tactical, 5.01" Barrel, OD Green, 45ACP
XD9666 - XD Tactical w/thumb safety, 5.01" Barrel, Stainless, 45ACP
XD9812 - XD Sub-compact, 3.01" Barrel, OD Green, .40S&W
XD9842 - XD Sub-compact? wtf is this?
XDM9202 - XDM, 4.5" Barrel, Black, .40S&W
XDM9212 - XDM, 4.5" Barrel, Bi-Tone Stainless/Black, .40S&W

Thanks for your thoughts!

if you have a big hand and chose the 1911, you might wanna have a gunsmith grind down the bottom where it sits in your palm. It digs into my hand and it feels sharp.

XD versus 1911?
You could compare the XD versus the Glock - in which case I would get a Glock.
What are you using this gun for?
Shoot your choices side by side then choose.
Look hard at Glock:
Until someone else makes a weapon that has the following qualities, I will continue to recommend the Glock:
- Inexpensive and easily obtainable parts
- No hand fitting of parts
- All parts can be "dropped in" with one tool (in Glock's case a 3/32" punch)
- If you get an appropriate guide/video you could work on the Glock yourself.
- The XD almost always has to go back to Springfield for repair.
- Extreme simplicity of function and construction
- Excellent reliability
- More than adequate accuracy
- A grip that can be "learned"
- A trigger that is the same every time and is easily refined
- Requires minimal maintenance
- Fast and positive trigger reset
- Low bore access
- Smooth, easy to carry exterior
- Tons of aftermarket support
- Holsters will be far easier to find for a Glock
- Great customer service
Glock or XD, for me Glock
M&P or XD, for me M&P
M&P or Glock, for me Glock
Some day someone will make a better pistol then Glock and when they do, I'll buy it . . . until then, I shall keep looking.

So I suppose we can put you down on the list of disliking Springfield...

btw, thanks for being true to the interwebz in not actually having anything to offer with respect to the actual question that I asked in my original post. I have no dislike of Glock, or special appreciation for Springfield... I just have a unique opportunity that RARELY comes around. You can bet that if I had the same opportunity to be buying from Glock, I definitely would be!

Thanks!

So - what are you using the gun for?
If you are filling a niche in your 1911 collection any of those fullframe 1911s will do and can be built up endlessly by a good gunplumber.
I would avoid the subcompact 1911 chambered for .40 - parts and mags will cost a fortune.
The XD9842 is an XD subcompact in .40.
I field tested a subcompact SAXD.40 in 2003 and have no complaints about it.
Springfields will serve you well.
It's not really a Springfield design. We got used to seeing them in the Balkans under the name HS2000. They are made for SA by HS Produkt in Ozalj Croatia.
It's a great gun with many features a Glock lacks.
But this all comes back to 'What are you using it for?'
Is it a carry gun? A range gun? For home defense?

To fill anyone else who is interested in this thread in...

DevilC and I had a nice chat in messages about this topic. As I mentioned to him, I will primarily be using these for general target shooting and I will be using the subcompact for carry. I have been using my stainless 9mm S&W for carry and I am looking for something smaller, lighter, and more powerful.

I have ordered these:

XD9402 - XD Tactical, 5.01" Barrel, Black, .40S&W
XD9842 - XD Sub-compact, 3.01" Barrel, Black, .40S&W
XDM9212 - XDM, 4.5" Barrel, Bi-Tone Stainless/Black, .40S&W

They should be in at the end of next week! I'll take some pix and post them when I get them!

Thanks to everyone for your input!

You will appreciate one caliber and one mag type across your collection.
Using the same frame for carry, home defense, and practice @ the range has great advantages.
Good stuff.

Nearly every one of these things you have listed is now available for the XD. 5 years ago? Maybe not.

What about the accidental discharges reported by LE agencies leading to glock refitting many of their models with a "safer" trigger. The XD grip safety eliminates that concern.

While they may be 'available' but not cheap.
Glock parts and accessories are very inexpensive.
The trigger problems resulted from the orange NY heavier triggers installed after-market.
BUT if you're getting 3 new XDs for under $1000 - you cannot say no!
You've gotta' run with it.

Haha i wish i could say i just ordered 3 pieces. Those are awesome buys BTW, and keeping the caliber the same across the board is a smart idea. One stop shopping when you go for ammo.

Speaking of shopping for ammo...

I was in WalMart last night getting some foodz for this week so I wandered over to the "Sporting Goods" section to look at the ammo situation. I could not believe how bare the shelves were in the ammo lockers! Anyhow, they did have .40S&W on hand. I picked up three 100 count boxes with the Winchester name on them (white box) and it ran me about $96 including the 7% tax. Certainly not cheap, but not as expensive as it could have been, I'm sure!

I was surprised that they were completely out of the 100 count boxes of 9mm. That's okay, however, I have several hundred rounds of that... I need to start stocking up on the .40S&W!

Hopefully the new XD's will be in this week! I'm looking forward to it! I'll post some pix when I get them.

Looks like you made a good choice!

Not really elated to the original topic, but Jonsered said that several million rounds of ammunition sold at the SAR gunshow in Phoenix in early December. Also, DPMS supposedly sold 600+ AR series rifle receivers. Looks to me like whatever Obama's decisions on guns, most people have already prepared.

...most people have already prepared.

or, like me, are in the process of preparing.

Is it bad that I want to have at least 1000 rounds of each type of ammo on hand for each gun that I own?

i.e. since I will have three guns that use .40S&W, I would like to have 3000 rounds of ammo on hand... I need to pick up a couple more boxes of 9mm to have that quota filled (I'm currently at 800 rounds, unopened), I need quite a lot of shotgun shells, and another box or two of .22LR.

Today I picked up the XD9842. I promptly came home and ran a clip through it. I must say, I was concerned that this one would kick a lot harder since it is so much physically smaller than the other two are. It isn't nearly as bad as I was expecting! I REALLY like this little guy! Check out the compound spring in this one! I was wondering how they could make it so small and still have all that tension!
