Between all the mines, military ruins and amazing landscapes I think Alaska would be the best choice. I know a lot of east coast people who'd love to see the Buckner Building.

Definitely an Alaska meet, since Anchorage has a good concentration of abandonments. We got two abandoned Nike sites, some homes on the hillside, car dump, Northern Lights Hotel, and of course the Big B. If we can get something going over the summer, I'll be ready.

There is an Idaho there too ya know...

Lol, I'm just a few minutes from washington though, so its alright. I'd be intrigued about a convention close to where I live though. Intrigued indeed...

Hi. I'm new to this part of the boards. Living in PDX now. Anyhow, I'd be interested in a meet if the locales were remote. I'm not interested in exploring a city with people I don't know if there's the chance the cops could pull up at anytime, but exploring in more remote locations (AK) would be great. I'd be down for a trip to AK. Any locals able to give any info about hostels? It seems hotels there are pretty expensive from what I've looked at.

The Spenard hostel in Anchorage is OK, I crashed there for a while when I was working in town. Only drawback is it's kind of far from anything. The Backpackers Inn downtown looks decent, but don't confuse it with the "International Backpackers Inn", which is in the bad part of town!

An Alaska convention would need a lot of free time, even around Anchorage it takes a while to get between sites. Going up to Fairbanks is an 8 hour drive (or 5 if you don't care about speed limits). Out to Kennicot/McCarthy is also 8 hours from Anchorage, probably a little more since the road is shit. It's worth it, but pretend you're camping with no ameneties when you pack, as anything and everything in McCarthy is like 400% markup in price.

Just getting to Alaska takes some time/money too. It's about $300 for a 3-day trip on the Ferry from Bellingham or Prince Rupert (I may be forgetting the fares, check http://www.dot.sta...s/amhs/index.shtml for rates). Driving up from the lower 48/Canada is a lot of fun, but also very long. Just going from Haines to Fairbanks took the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on audiobook, and when the movie came out later that year I kept thinking they were journeying through northwestern Canada

Whitter has not just the Buckner building, but some wierd tunnels as well. On the way there's the ghost town of Portage (mostly ruins), and some abandoned trains.

Closer to Anchorage, there's the mines up at Hatcher's pass. Those are worth an overnight camping trip, once you get away from the tourist museum there's a lot of wide-open adits. Hint: Parkies are too lazy to climb up to the higher mines and seal the entrances.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Some of my friend and I are interested in an Alaska meet. If it's any help there's two places I'd be down to see depending on how hard/time consuming the travel time is.

Buckner Building, it should be the feature of the meet.

Kennicot Mine looks well worth it.

Unfortunately Dutch Harbor seems out of the question due to be located halfway down the Aleutian Island chain, damn!

Fairbanks has quite a few mines and gold dredges. Worth the trip, but not sure if it would work in a meet.

If indeed we are going to set up something, plans should be laid out by at least March or April. Gives some heads up time for others interested.

Well it sounds more like this could actually happen... so lets try to get a few more people interested, then maybe start talking about some plans... Of course we need to make sure people can actually make it first, like freak said it is expensive.

Washington or Oregon get my vote. I've seen enough of Alaska personally, and I'm keen to see the more urban side of urban exploration. I'd still participate in an AK convention if it happened while I was in state though.

Yeah, although AK is rad, and in my opinion, the best place ever... I think would be more practical... I hate oregon though. But if enough people wanted to come up here, i'd still be down to do it, as long as i havent moved yet

Unless plane tickets are extremely cheap, I can't make it that far to Alaska.

Why not come down to CA this summer to our COPEX? You'll get an event star just for being there!

... okay, I tried.

Even if its held in Washington, you can catch dirt cheap flights from San Jose to SEA or PDX.
