Posted by underdark The " it could have been you" argument isn't even an argument, it is a pointless appeal to emotions that has very little place in a situation like this.

You are exactly right, "it could have been you" was an emotional appeal intended to try to sway your point of view, not an argument in defense of my position. Embryonic stem cell research is unnecessary. Other equally effective and useful technologies exist now such as harvesting adult stem cells or collecting them from umbilical cord blood which do not require the use of living embryos. I concur with the Vatican and posted the link here for everyone to read if they like. Groups like PETA get all in an uproar about people experimenting on animals and such. They picket, advertise their cause and occasionally break into labs to let the captives loose as if the world is going to end if one more rat dies in the name of science. The media and the general public make them out to be passionate heroes of all things wild and free. I find it disturbing that people who try to save unborn human beings with equal zest are mocked, harassed and ridiculed for their efforts by members of the very species they are trying to protect. Go figure.

Don't forget Trixi, that on UER, members of PETA also get mocked, harassed and ridiculed for their efforts.... not that I disagree with that particular stance on PETA mind you. I think it's best to get stem cells from cord blood or whatever before anything else, but I am not against embryonic stem cell research. But then again, I am a pro-choice/pro-lifer. Meaning that while I do not personally find abortion to be an option for me, I feel that it should be a choice made available for all women. So maybe that explains my stance on this.
So I said "Why don't you shove it where the sun don't shine" and so he did. He put it in the cupboard under the stairs and it hasn't been mentioned since. -Stephen Fry | |
People with ridiculous ideas should be mocked, for example believing that saying the right words over crackers will transform them into the flesh of a 2,000 year old dude. I think that a scientist working with stem cells is doing so much more to save humans than you and your ilk with carrying dead fetus pictures. PETA is junk, and should be mocked. Chances are you are here because of animal testing. Animal testing likely had a lot more to do with yuur quality of life than magical thinking. Polio, diphtheria and Smallpox vaccines were all developed using animal testing. The treatment of diabetes with insulin was discovered through experimentation on dogs in Toronto, and until recently all insulin was extracted from animals. Kidney, heart and lung transplants are all possible now directly because of animal research. This is classic: http://videosift.c...Bullshit-PETA-1530
It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. Research not involving living embryos is great and should be perused as far as possible. If in the end these avenues produce better results than embryonic stem cell studies then great. But ending a line of research because of someones invisible friend, or worse the all too fallible humans that interpret his intentions, is bullshit. Oh, PETA? Yeah, they are all sorts of bullshit. Total agreement on their portrayal in the media not lining up with the reality of their org.

Super good news just happened upon a minute ago: http://www.youtube...atch?v=lDFJOzu9SyM

Great! If that is what works then we use it. All I want is science in my research department. If science and theology can be happy at the same time that's great. (As long as this Dr. Oz guy is right. I mean, he is on Oprah saying this, not speaking at the AMA convention or a major medical conference. That does color my opinion a bit)

Look what also happened many minutes ago: http://www.theonio...m_source=a-section

Hilarious! "The Onion" rocks. On a more serious note, I would like to see a return to the good old days where most young adults finished school, started a career, became engaged, saved money for marriage and a family BEFORE actually becoming betrothed and having sex? Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder and reduces the number of unwanted pregnancies dramatically

True...but unrealistic. Proper sex education has proven to be more effective - and teens and young adults are going to get it on anyway cuz it makes your bits feel good and stuff. Oh yeah and we are biologically programmed to want it. Responsible sex: feels good, no lasting afterbelly.

ya wanna know how many review boards I had to go through to get a data set on mental health court referrals with nonidentifying information?
It would of been months of work, had I not contacted the researcher personally.
I have a hard time believing that modern science sacrifices or disrespects humanity.
