So, we have these nutty, kinda alcoholic but not in a bad way neighbors who are all into triathlons and my wife signs me up for one. Running I'm Ok with--I used to could run a 10k in almost 40 minutes--FLYIN!!! But, the bicycle part is something new. I ride my bike around town and in the woods but never for speed. Seeing that the event is in like 2 weeks I go out on a 16 mile ride yesterday--all good, took a while (hour and 15 minutes) but physically I was alright. That is until I bent down to pick up a pencil and both my hamstrings balled up like frightened turtles! I had to walk like Frankenstein across my office to work them out. LOL.

You betcha

G to the Race, If you want to get that Tri done w/minimum pain you're going to have to do your own therapy. Stretch after every workout (never before) Try straight leg toe touches (no bouncing) when you can do that, try pressing hands flat on the ground...At home during the day put your heel up on a counter top and lean into it, coupla times a day. You'll be fine, I'm guessing you weren't much on stretching before. You may also want to use a foam roller specifically for those hamstrings. I can e-mail exercises if you like. Good luck.

You've inspired me to stay overweight.

I thank you.

Here's a kicker.

Lately, my ankle was flaring and I thought it was the chipped bone acting up. The difference was, most of my foot was swollen and painful along the top near the big toe. On the third flare up, I finally got it checked. Gee, it turned out to be a mild form of gout. I know someone who has it and I'm not looking forward to it. Also, checked my weight, it actually went up (over 300 again *sh*t!*). Fortunately, the rest of the blood work has come up negative for diabetes. Also, the meds are keeping my blood pressure relatively normal which is a relief.

No wonder I've been extremely sluggish lately. I figured that the last site I worked at, had no patrols. I just sat at the desk every day. Well, I'm up now and forcing myself to be more mobile. Damn, very discouraging as I had actually lost weight earlier this year.

Rain that sucks. I had the same symptoms awhile back. I just figured it was because I work 12 nights on concrete. I went to the doc because it got to the point that I could barely get my boots on. I'll be damned it was the gout. I feel you pain that crap hurts!

I ended up buying expensive new boots for work.

Simplest thing is usually the answer in my case. It was my work shoes causing a lot of the swelling problems I've been having lately because of their weight and lack of support. I worked 2 double shifts last week and my ankles swelled up to three times their normal size from the oxford type steel toe shoes I was wearing, so after two years, I ended up going back to Magnums. Except instead of the 70 dollar ones...I ended up buying 120 dollar ones because they're not steel toe, they're ASTM approved composite (carbon fiber) toes that handle the same compression and impact weights as steel.

So after this realization, I have to replace my sneakers too. My sandals are still okay, they're just really starting to get comfortable and weren't the cause of the swelling, but now, I need sneakers and that won't be cheap either.

I just wish I could wear cheap shoes.

Good boots are a must. I have always hated sneakers for work, they don't seem to hold up as long. I did however get a pair of Red Wings. Because of the solvent and inks there is a static issue. They had nothing in the way of a boot with a static rating that I liked. All too big and heavy. They seem to be doing ok but I am noticing in less than 6 months it might be time for a new pair. I am hoping to make it till Oct. when they give out the $100 voucher. Not worth the wait if I am going to be in pain again.

Those are what I bought. They might be of some interest to you, since they solved all my problems. They're EH rated, and something that the electricians where Sam and I work often wear since there's absolutely no metal in them. I bought mine from IPP, which is the company our employer contracts with for supply of safety toe shoes. They send a supply truck once a month to the mill parking lot where you can go get shoes and use your allowance and most of their boots hold up, at least where I work.

They're extremely light, under 10 ounces a shoe and the leather is waterproof and kind of stiff until you break them in, but they have really good support. I've been wearing them for five days so far and no blisters, there's no break in period either. You can just about wear them right out of the box. I'm on my feet anywhere from 8 to 16 a day and these have been amazing so far.

It's just the cost. I ended up paying 40 bucks on top of my 75 dollar shoe allowance. They are literally the most comfortable shoes I've ever had for work. It's probably the best 40 bucks I've ever spent.

Thanks I will look. I spent $140 on the last pair. Well worth it. We work 12 hours and there is no sitting allowed except for the 2 20 minute breaks and the 35 minute lunch.

Torn meniscus on both sides, right knee. Can still do 26.2.
Developed a non-specific rhinitis at 60, but it's seasonal.
Ten pounds overweight, but that's seasonal too.

Thats it. Compared to you guys I guess I'm Mr. Lucky. Thanx all for helping me see that.

Yup. And I was told to lose weight. The sad part was that I wasn't drinking much alcohol to begin with.

It definitely does. On the even worse cases, just putting a very light blanket on the joint can mean extreme agony. Not fun. The doc told me mine is mild. If that's the case, I definitely don't want the full case. To add further insult to injury, the anti-inflammatories were upsetting my stomach so I had to stop using them. Not fun having to hobble to the can as quickly as possible.
The flare up has finally gone down to a minor nuisance so I can go back to work. As mentioned, I have to lose weight again which is not going to be easy.

When I worked at the bank, I was also on my feet all day. Originally, they demanded we had hard leather soled shoes and I finally got around that by wearing black running shoes that had no pattern. I found they were not only a lot more comfortable to wear but they were safer as they didn't slip on the floor like the hard soled shoes.

you guys should see my fucking neck from last week at work...

lime dust (caustic/base) interacts with the sweat (acid) on the back of my neck and causes burns... it's turning my skin to leather. I have all these blisters on the back of my neck right now. Guy I was working with laughed and told me not be such a candy ass and get used to it.

how many years do i have left in this place?

OUCH! Doesn't sound pleasant at all.

Too many from the sound of it. Is the guy having the same problem? Then don't bother talking with him. If he doesn't, then let him know he can kiss your ass as he doesn't know what the f**k he's talking about.

Everybody that works the job Sam has been working on gets that, lime just causes wonderful issues when it hits skin, especially when the skin is wet.

Dry chemicals usually don't cause major reactions, but Sam is one of those people who sweats a lot, so he's soaking wet most of the time at work, since where he works is hot as hell.

Where I work gets hot, but usually I can sneak out the side door into the fresh air a little. Only dangerous chemicals I deal with are in the glue, and that's only if you like to sniff it or get it in your eyes. Kinda hard to get stoned off borax and vinyl acetate though.

Well, glad to say I'm doing much better now. The flare up is pretty much gone, the swelling is gone although there is a minor ache still in my ankle. From before, I know it'll be gone within a week.

And yesterday, I was able to cut my grass for the first time in three weeks. What a hell of a job that was! I think the lawn mower sighed with relief when I put it away after the job was done.

While cutting the grass though, I started laughing when I remembered this thread in 'Other'.

Damn! I should have got nostra-YOUPPI! to send her over to my place while I was not able to cut the grass.
