A question of decay
< on 10/13/2008 5:20 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
I recently was told to destroy 10 pallets of 35mm release prints; all of them are amazing cult films. Now, I need to know what it means that they smell like vinegar.

Can they be projected?

Should they be saved, or should I scrap them for art projects?

This wasn't a subject really touched on in film school, so any information about how film decays is useful.

You should definitely not destroy them and you should ask on an urban explorers forum even less. If they're amazing cult films, you might want to check with the folks at Troma. They've done a bit with preserving old cult films. Otherwise, you should check on a forum dedicated to motion picture film.

I can't sell them on the open market, but I am interested in projecting them privately. I have no plans for their destruction, aside from those already trashed beyond repair that I have multiples of.

Earthworm - where are you located? Look for a shop that is proven in restoration or transfer. A good shop can show you proof of their work, and show you the techniques they use to test and transfer things. Of course it can be expensive. But making digital copies is nice nowadays. And you get to keep the reels themselves in 'mint' condition instead of playing them over and over.

Nobody seems to have told them that.

If they just smell like vinegar right now, TAKE THEM OUT OF THE CANS. If you leave them in for much longer the film will basically jelly together. If you don't mind me asking, what movies are they ?

Incredible! They must be saved. Or Roger Corman will come back and start chewing babies heads off in the middle of the night. I mean mall, or whenever he feels like it Seriously, there must be someone willing to keep them and gradually transfer to digital.
