This past weekend, I was the ham radio operator at a checkpoint in a 4x4 race at Browns Camp here in Oregon. Each checkpoint was manned by a ham and at least one other person from the event staff who was able to monitor CB radio which the drivers used to talk with each other and to relay to us if they get stuck, need medical help, etc. I was at checkpoint 5.
This particular race was whats called a poker race where each vehicle has to to each checkpoint and complete a task. At our checkpoint, the driver had to close his or her's eyes and have the the passenger direct them to drive over logs we had in a small path around 40 feet long. I guess the other checkpoints had stuff that was super lame (something with rings as I understand was one of them). They got a poker card and points for completing each task.
Highlights of event include:
-Between Checkpoint 3 and 4 has the longest distance and time between them and per instructions the drivers had, they had to a weird double back on one road. Somehow, 10 drivers got confused about that and bypassed checkpoint 4 directly to us.
-There was 6 checkpoints originally and by 4 PM or so we decided since only 25% of vehicles made it to our checkpoint to make it the end. Of course by 5 PM, only 75% made it too so the our trail marshal just officially called it done.
-There was a BBQ & Raffle at the end at 5:30 PM. Of course since the race ran late the people who did make it back on time went over board and put like 3 steaks on their plates while other people only got like half of a steak and of course some people got nothing.
-The guy who won the raffle and the race threw a huge fit when he got back and found out there was no food left and threw a warming tray. He returned his raffle ticket and demanded his entry fee back. Duane, who was running the race said he would talk to him Monday about it but would mention to him he won but won't get anything now because he got his $50 back.
Oh for the record, my Honda Passport did fine on the moderate trails
