He wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. And now it's cost him his life.
A man who fell three storeys into a coal chute at the Hearn Generating Station on Unwin Ave. Sunday has died. The unidentified man was with a friend when the pair snuck into the restricted facility on the weekend, apparently to take what cops are terming "artistic photographs" of the interior of the-soon-to-be demolished building.
The victim ventured out onto one of the catwalks to get a better angle when disaster struck - he lost his balance and took the terrifying tumble.
His friend immediately called for help, but it was no easy rescue.
The man was trapped inside the cavernous hole for three long hours, painfully pinned by a piece of metal that wound up lodged on top of him. "He fell on top of the steel plate and while he was trying to get himself out or move around he ended up sliding underneath and getting pinned," Toronto Fire Dist. Chief Paul Halls reported at the scene.
It took crews a while to reach him and gingerly lift him out, realizing he'd suffered serious internal injuries.
But how serious wasn't clear until doctors treated him in hospital. And despite their best efforts, he succumbed there on Tuesday. His name hasn't been released but his family has been notified.
The Ministry of Labour and Police are both still probing what happened.

shit that is terrible. I cant believe this guy died.....
I often spoke aloud at Hearn my fear of "dropping to my fucking death" from the upper catwalks. I cant believe that someobody was unfortunate enough to live through such a terrible experience. I cant imagine what his friend must be going through right now.
I think micro's shots of the hoppers are dead on...however, most of them have been cut away recently...starting @ the front of the place, and working their way back. Last time I was there, only a few remained. heres a shot inside one - as you can see, not a nice place to be for even 1 minute, let alone 3+ hrs :s
This guy lived out my worst fear. I dont care what you say, it could have been any one of us. RIP man.
And I really hope this doesnt get spun by the media into an overly critical article on UE...the last thing I want is the TPD to be busting people with cameras now.

This is likely. "UE", whatever the heck that is, may even deserve to be criticized in this situation.

Obviously Im not talking about toronto PD targeting people walking down bay st. with point & shoots...but I can certainly picture this ushering in a new era of scrutiny and animosity towards people with cameras who may have otherwise been disregarded. Any attention of this kind is bad attention I think...

Man dies after three-story fall in abandoned power plant

Toronto - A 26-year old man who fell three stories in an abandoned power plant in the Port Lands on Sunday has succumbed to his injuries.
Police say two photographers snuck into old R.L. Hearn Thermal Generating Station on Unwin Avenue Sunday afternoon to take artistic pictures.
One of the men fell from the sixth floor catwalk into an abandoned coal hopper three stories below. It took emergency crews almost three hours to pull the man out.
Police now say he has died in hospital.
The plant has been closed off and undergoing demolition. The Ministry of Labour and Toronto Police are investigating.

I don't think TPS is going to be busting everyone they see with a camera.
However, because somebody died as a result of trespassing in an industrial building, I just can't see the Ministry of Labour not doing anything about it. It would be irresponsible for them not to. Imagine if you were this guy's family. How would you feel if the Ministry just sat there and didn't do anything to try and make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again.
As we all know, their efforts won't change anything in reality, but they still have to put on the show. In this case, because Hearn is in such a state of disrepair, I'm afraid that "show" might just be a full demolition. The station has already been "abandoned" in terms of their plans to make it a film studio, so there's not much else it can be used for...currently it is sitting empty, owing an ungodly amount of back taxes, and I'm sure this incident will only further hike up their insurance premiums. It's a liability at this point, and the City doesn't like liability.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this unknown explorer -- and I (selfishly) hope it was not someone who I considered dear.
Anyone who has been to the upper levels of Hearn in the last few months knows that they've been literally ripping out all of the internals -- the boilers, the pipes, and all of the related machinery. I suppose if you were walking backwards to get the perfect shot and tripped or didn't look behind you, you could fall.
I don't think that this thread is the appropriate place to argue on whether or not this man was an explorer or not; the proper uses of the acronym "UE"; or how this might affect our community in the eyes of the press.
RIP, unknown explorer. You died doing what you loved; not many people have that luxury.

RIP fellow explorer, my best regards to his family.
My last exploration to this place was in the dead of night and it is feasible in its present state that this could happen to anyone, not only the idiots. Especially to the explorers going up into the catwalks for their first time. Heck I haven't even been up there. Axle's point of the 1% of explorers who enter don't venture up there, this works in my case.

this is horrible. this could be any of us who weren't careful or endured a terrible and unfortunate accident. it's a damn shame and i couldn't feel worse for the family or the explorer's friend.
as far as whether he was 'one of us', it doesn't matter whether he was on this or any other "UE" or "UrbEx" or "photography" website.... if he snuck into places where he wasn't supposed to be it doesn't matter whether or not he was part of a website - he knew what he was doing and was there for that reason. he knew what he got himself into and tragically suffered the worst of consequences.
