New plan for former St. John's School calls for single-family dwellings, apartment units

A proposed redevelopment of a former elementary school on Jane Street in the city’s south end will be considered by city council Monday.

Council, sitting as planning committee, will consider an application to change the zoning for the former St. John’s School at 746 Jane St. to a modified residential district.

The school moved to Park Street several years ago into the former Confederation Public School.

The zoning change would allow the developer to create four lots for single-detached houses next to the former school that would be converted into 14 apartments.

The property is south of Morrow Park. It is bordered by Jane Street to the west, Braidwood Avenue to the north and Young Street to the east.

Council approved a different plan for the redevelopment of the site late last year.

The developer originally planned to build 19 apartments within the former school and six units in semi-detached dwellings at the southwest corner of the property.

The property owner found it would be too expensive to convert the gymnasium at the north end of the building into residential units, land use planner Caroline Kimble states in a release.

“The revised program includes removal of the former gymnasium,” she states.

The gymnasium would be torn down and a parking lot for 15 vehicles would be built in that area.

The owner would subdivide the property to create four building lots on the east side of the property along Young Street.

City staff recommend the planning department monitor the four proposed lots to make sure there’s adequate buffering and good urban design that’s compatible with the character of the neighbourhood.

Sounds worth checking out. It's always good to keep on your local newspapers.
