just retired my Fenix Ld20 after 5 years of use and have 2 LED lensers to replace it a P5 and 7.2 but i carry other torches for light painting.
Thing that most explorers forget is strong light is not always best. If you are not in a underground environment where bright light wont catch someones attention(usually). Using a torch then you need stealth, so are better off with a small one that can be closed out by just closing your fist around it can still be strong just easier to control.
The other important thing especially underground, carry plenty of rechargeable batteries. They are a godsend and its not a place to be caught short either !/

Have a 3D battery maglite. Really bright and despite the small chance of it happening, I could be used as a defence item if needed. Didn't buy it because of that, but when I held it with the batteries in it crossed my mind.

I used to use a 3D - I use the smaller LED flashlights now. Far better battery life and brightness, and carrying the 3D around gets to be an annoyance due to the weight.

I use this to light up any underground or no light rooms. Its great as you can also clip it to you and its magnetic. Works great to get shots of rooms with zero light.

Yeah...I know what you're thinking. $13 headlamp from china. Total piece of shit right? Well, not so much. I bought this exact light at a gun show for $60. It's 1,000 lumens, has high, low and strob. And it has a telescoping focus on it. I was stoked on getting it for $60. It blows every black Dimond and Petzl I've ever owned out of the water, then I saw it for $13 on amazon and I got supee excited. I'm about to order 3 more.
The plastics do feel a bit flimsy. I doubt it could survive a 10 foot drop on concrete but this thing is so fucking bright and cheap I don't care about its lack of durability. I promise you won't be disappointed in this headlamp, it's a great deal.

This one's awesome. I've had it for a few years and it feels solid. I dropped it quite a few times on hard surfaces still works perfectly good but snice its only $15 its not a big loss if I lose it or break it. The front part is hex shaped so its resistant to rolling away. It has low and high that you cycle by double clicking. It say 100 lumens. I find it much brighter than necessary unless you're in a drain. You need like ONE lumen in much of UE situations.

I'm starting to realize how many freaking choices there are for flashlights and would love to narrow the field down a bit. I know it's a slightly narrow niche I'm calling on (but what better place than UER to find you guys), but are there any fellow light painting urban explorers out there that have found that perfect flashlight?
I'm looking for something (in perfect flashlight world):
1. With the ability to zoom (tighten and broaden the beam)
2. Different colors (or capable of fitting gels on the head)
3. Rechargeable
4. Adjustable beam/brightness
5. At least 500 or more lumens on full bright.
6. Under $100.00
Yeah, it's pretty specific, but you'd be amazed how many flashlights are out there that does all this (and way more)

I use a 2D LED Maglite. I'd get a larger model (I'm the kind of person who says "Is there a bigger one?" when it comes to tools, etc.) but I'm concerned about it being perceived as a weapon; it's just a reliable, rugged flashlight.
Been considering picking up a Fenix sometime, but for now the Maglite will do.

Hello. I've done a lot of lightpainting. Zooming is not nearly as useful as it seems, especially since the zooming mechanism cuts output by about 40%. I focus on waterproof (zoomies lose here too), bright, and no damn blink modes. You can make color gels with packing tape and sharpies. Patterns even. I made a rainbow filter.
Look for a cheap aspheric flashlight. Baby it and feed it good batteries (li-ion preferably). And since they cost $10 like that, buy 3 and bring all 3. A fistful of light works well.
I liked neutral white lights with conventional reflectors a lot more. Since you're painting with light, the beam shape does not have too show unless you want. The only times I've needed an aspheric's beam was for some tunnel portraits. Mixrd a flash with a few cheap aspherics.

I personally like these new FEIT Electric flashlights I just bought, It comes as a three pack: 1000 lumens, 750 lumens (I believe), and 250 lumens. Best thing is that they have a high power and low power setting, and you can adjust the focus of the beam from wide to focused. Use the 1000 lumen when you know noone can see, 750 normally, and I keep the 250 lumen light secured in my pocket as a EDC flashlight1.

Some are simply on and off, the ones I carry have three output options, full power, half power, and a strobe function.
The focused beam is pretty intense when you zoom it in. In a dark area these have always proven to be more than bright enough. And at the price I don't care if I lose them. I run rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, but over the counter ones work as well, just not as bright. (I would actually be more upset if I lost the battery than the flashlight)
I have another that I carry that is purely for self defense, I do not have a picture or a link for it. Friend of mine I work with built it for me. It is larger than the ones in the link, more like my surefire in size. Extremely bright, but it defaults to the strobe pattern in case I need to distract or get away.
In a dark environment hitting someone in the face with several hundred lumens of strobe can give you quite a pit of time to get out. Fight or flight, my first option is always flight. lol

This is the one I use and it has a pretty good output. May not be the most powerful one out there, but I've never had an issue with it. Had it for about 3-4 years so far and the only time the light dims is when it needs new batteries. Runs on two AAA batteries. Small and lightweight, the less weight in my bag, the better.

Personally I use a TacLight t1100. I know its "as seen on TV" but its worked really well for me. It has three different brightness settings, a strobe, and S.O.S., the latter two aren't very useful. My favorite part is that it has an adjustable beam width/zoom. Alongside that its pretty hardy, at least according to the commercials haha.
