This whole scouting experience had a pretty funny story actually. My brother, two of my friends, and I went looking for a way to get into the subway since all the material we could find on the net was really useless. So we first went into the small tunnels. Nothing too exciting in there except a large piece of graffiti on the wall at the end of the tunnel which read "this is in fact the end of the tunnel." Afterward we went to check out the portals to the main system. The doors are sealed as well as the windows. We walked along the side of the tunnels checking each window to no avail. The exit ramp for the western hills viaduct butts up right against the wall of the subway about a quarter mile from the main portals so we turned around and decided to come from the other side to check the remaining windows in the wall before the subway becomes fully underground. When we got the other side and parked somewhere we had to walk up a flight of stairs which were closed off by a small fence. After we got up to the fence a short black guy came walking by and saw us. He came over to us and started talking. It turns out he lived on those stairs and had never heard of the subway. He talked and talked. Eventually he told us he was going to become a minister and then proceeded to sing for us. He sang about five or six hymns before we decided to just go home. In the end I guess you never know what you will find doing urban exploring and sometimes having a homeless guy sing to you for twenty minutes can be more fun than what you had planned.
