LOL. Some SUVs are not bad. My Honda Passport (rebadged Isuzu Rodeo) is really just a SUV on a truck frame (Isuzu Hombre/Chevy S-10 if I remember right) and it sucks.

SUVs just suck in general.
too heavy
too slow
too crappy on gas
too useless to even be called anything sporty or utility.

you want 4wd? buy a truck or a Subaru
you want utility? buy a truck or station wagon.
you want sport? buy a truck or a car.

Generally I would agree with this for the majority of soccer moms that own bigass SUVs because the ones that are designed to be rugged hardly ever see anything but suburban side streets and maybe some highway..
However my current car (Ford Torus wagon) is on it's death bed and more then likely get worse gas mileage then the 4runner.. In an ideal world where other people didn't drive like ass hats I would still be driving my '79 Plymouth Volare Wagon with a smile on my face, but sadly it was taken before it's time was up.. Not to mention I have a strong policy of if I have it I'll use it, so I am sure if this thing ends up getting fixed I'll be damn sure it won't live out the rest of it's days on suburban side streets.. *grin*

No, Skelly and I go back and forth all the time. He's used to it.

I just have no use for SUV's in my little continuum.

Just a question..... Subaru, aren't they all AWD not 4WD? Now granted I don't know the exacts of the differences, but I assume it's mostly gear ratios or somesuch, but would AWD preform in rugged terrain at all as well as 4WD? Or are they pretty much interchangeable and just different terms for basically the same thing? (and I don't exactly mean just dirt roads, because I have seen Subaru rally cars tear that shit apart, I meant more of complete wilderness type terrain)

good question.
i remember old Subies from the late 70's and into the 80's had a 4WD button on the shifter and said 4wd on the car. Maybe this was before the AWD term became en vogue?

Took a look at Wikipedia and found this:

This model eventually became the best-selling 4WD car in the world. Subaru's success in marketing AWD vehicles has led to an AWD-only lineup in almost all of its markets outside of Japan. By 1998, Subaru discontinued all two-wheel drive vehicles in North America, where it remains the only brand to be exclusively AWD.

that's amazing for a Yota... i've seen 4x4 Yotas be absolutely piss-pounded with few if any ill effects to the engine/driveline.

weird.

My buddy has a shit load of these four runners, and he hasn't had any drivetrain issues(knock on wood)and he beats them hard. I did have have another buddy that his rear diff went in his yota, but to replace that once you have a repacement carrier is about an hour job with a slide hammer. As for the sway effect , Toyota had a recall on the centerlink, or one of the front end parts that they still honour to this day. My buddy had his 1992 4 runner fixed this summer for no charge. Or the sway bars links maybe rotted out, if there is a weak link (no pun intended) on a toyota, this would be it.

Took a look at Wikipedia and found this:

I want to say that the old Subies had a locking PTO in their transmissions for the 4wd and later cars had the newer style AWD setup... i seem to remember something like that, but the memory is getting as rusty as a Subaru.

By the way... U R A BUS.

I'm not sure about the Subarus, but I know some of the Audi 4000s had manual locking front a rear diffs, and some of the Audi 5000s had a button on the dash to lock the diffs.

My favourite, obscure 4x4 car? The Tercel wagon. Shift on the fly 4x4, with low range, and if you had it in low range, a 6th gear was enabled in the transaxle, called "EL" for extra low. It could pretty much climb trees. I really wish I could find one- some of the SR-5 models came with a plaid interior, sweet alloy rims, and a grade/tilt indicator gauge set on the dash, with a picture of the car (Like the ones available for Jeeps)... truly awesome.

my friend Eric had one of those... I buried it one night so badly it had to be dragged out with a front-end loader. In my opinion those old SR5's sat on too small a tire. And were uber gutless.

Yeah I think the horsepower rating for the 3A engine was in the negatives, but they damn near lasted forever.
