2000 Lincoln LS V8 vs. 2002 Buick LeSabre Limited

Circumstances have dictated these are the two cars I have to choose from (long story) and maybe and Audi A4 don't know much about it, but it's probably gonna be either the Lincoln or the Buick. Also someone mentioned to me a 2002 Volkswagon Golf(I think that's how it's spelled) but that also looks unlikely. If anyone has any info or suggestions on these two cars I would appreciate it. The Lincoln and Buick have around 70K miles on them and the Audi has close to 200K. I have no information on the Volkswagon.

The Golf really isn't in the same class as the other two cars. The VW is a sporty compact, whilst the other two are big luxury sedans. You'd have to pick which kind of car you want to drive more.

Personally I like the Audi A4 though I don't really know too much about the domestic choices.

Oh, and it's Volkswagen, meaning the people's car in German.

edit: just noticed the miles on the Audi and I agree with Samurai, that's way too high. I wouldn't touch anything with that much mileage on it.

i am a GM guy, but seriously, the Buicks are very reliable. That particular chassis has been in production for a long time. The problem with the Lincoln LS is that they were only made a couple of years (the DEW chassis went on to sit under the new Mustang), so parts availability may be sketchy. Personally, in my experience, I would stay away from ANY car with 200,000 miles on it. In my experience, especially a VW/Audi. The Lincoln LS was really fun with the manual transmission, but I find the 4.6L V8 to be a turd. I was never really impressed by it.

For ride and comfort, the Buick is a Barcalounger on wheels... I love those big old Buicks!!!

Oh god, the Buick Rendezvous my grandfather has is a beast. I swear...its combines the Klingon Battle cruiser quality that all Buick's have in a SUV. I think I could drive though a wall with that thing without a scratch.

The choices here are all over the place, it's bizarre. If it's a matter of price, go to some nearby towns or check the internet. The only car I'd consider over 200000 miles would be a Volvo, and even then I'd have serious doubts. 2000 was the first year for the LS, which was entirely new at the time, so it might not be reliable. The LS was known for its lack of interior storage space. The A4 is in an entirely different league of refinement and drivability, but with that many miles you're going to have to buy spare parts soon, and they're not going to be cheap on a German vehicle.

Edit- I shouldn't say the only car over 200000 miles would be a Volvo, but I just don't see myself ever buying a car like that.

I probably would take a car at 200k IF the owner was the first owner and he had a complete record of all repairs and general maintenance.

am I the only one who buys a 'low mileage' jeep with 200+k on the clock?

most recent aquisition has 341 and runs like a dream.

My dad drives a '99 New Beetle... 510,000 km on the clock, only repairs have been both front wheel bearings, both front ball joints, a steering rack and a starter. Still has the original battery and exhaust system.

Godamned. Dont you guys up North have any exposure to reliable affordable import cars? When i went to New York, all those idiots talked about were their GM cars and how shitty imports are. Ditch both the Buick and the Lincoln, but if you must choose one, keep the Lincoln. (you can make it pretty fast). 2002 Volkswagen? If its not a turbo model, its made in Mexico. Have fun with that one. Get yourself a Nissan, Honda, or Toyota from the 90's if you arent trying to impress anyone and really want a reliable car thats easy to work on and cheap to buy parts for.

GM (up until recently) = pieces of shit, no matter WHO says WHAT...even Sam. I always sense a little brand loyalty coming from him. Oh well its his own foot hes shooting, not mine.

Only uses about half a litre of oil between changes, too... and given how much he drives the car, the oil is changed every 10,000 km (Castrol Syntec 10w30).

He's pretty happy with it. The only real mileage related issues are the windshield is basically sandblasted, and the driver's seat has worn through in a few spots.

maybe if those wonderful imported cars lasted here as long as the others did, we'd be cool.
i've told enough horror stories for one thread.
buy what you want.
And yes, there is brand loyalty, big dave... there's brand loyalty because those cars have never let me down.

Im a jeep guy. To the core.

I dd a Tempo and I despise it. Sort of. Free, passed safety and emissions. Left me stuck twice due to starter issues. $350 starter and its fine again.

I just grabbed a 1989 XJ for $220. 391xxx k and its still going strong.

Get the A4 ONLY if it's in the 4cyl Turbo charged version with Quattro. The naturally aspirated and Front Wheel Drive versions are dreadful disappointments
