Winter Beater: 2007-2008 Edition

come on, you were all waiting for this, weren't you?
Waiting to see what i was going to get for a winter beater?
No? Eh, eat me then...

tis the season for winter beaters and schemes to obtain one.
After shopping around metaphysically wednesday and thursday, my brother called me and told me where a 1998 Chevy Cavalier was located for sale for the sum of $500 US. So, i go an look at it, not a bad car, engine is quiet. Will need a headgasket down the road, but it's just seeping where all the 2.2L OHV's seep. So, i purchased myself a 1998 Chevy Cavalier sedan. Color... oh this is the capper! The color is beige. (Chevy calls it some gold in the catalog from 98) And it has a tan interior. 2.2L OHV/ 4speed automatic.
130,000 miles

it's not in that bad of a shape.
pics to follow when I get it home.

it's remarkably solid underneath and the rot tha it does have is merely surface scale. I was actually going to put a spoiler on it, some aluminum wheels, a JC Whitney hoodscoop on it (just for the hell of it), and fix the rust. It's in good enough shape where I might keep it for a couple of years. It's no powerhouse with the 4speed auto, but it gets around ok. I have to put a CD player in it as the factory tape deck is on it's way out (and I don't have any tapes anymore).

Yeah, it seems to be in great shape. Nice beater.

I'm using my brothers ford this winter cause he can't drive alone till like june. It's a 2003 and in way worse condition than your cavalier.

the Cavalier failed tonite... about 10 miles from home, the engine quit and would not refire. I had to walk about 3 miles to a friends house (What happened to all the payphones in the universe??? Not everyone has or wants a cellphone!) and called my brother. He came down, looked at it and said it was either the crank sensor or the ignition module. So we towed the car back to a friendly garage my brother used to work at and I left the car.
So what's the problem? Well the car picked a fine time to die... this weekend we are expecting snow up the ying yang and I have to drive my Cobalt.
Yay.

Yeah I'm still driving the Tercel in this crap weather, because I need a fender for my winter car. (Not because it needs replacing, it's just not there... and I honestly am not sure what happened to it.)

It's pretty scary in the snow, as it weighs nothing, has super wide, low pro tires, more power than it is supposed to, and a pretty big suspension drop... plus I drive 115 km to work, one way, every day.

And I want a Trabant 601. The two-stroke would be tedious though.

that's the problem with the Cobalt... too low, too wide a tire, way too much power, not enough traction FROM the tires it does have... Tomorrow I am taking my Mom's Silverado to work. Luckily it's 4WD.

blah.
cars suck.
all of them!!!

Yeah I've been driving the Durango everywhere.

I'm pretty sure I heard a gas pump tell me to bend over.

i put $25 in my mom's truck this morning... that was about 6 gallons.
luckily, driving slow that big old 5.3L lump along at 1000 RPMS. Keeps the guzzlage to a minimum.
