| | | This is a thread I am sure is destined to fall down the page within days, but I simply must appeal to you for information. There is a 3 or 4 story building on the Northeast corner of Shuter and Mutual Sts. in Toronto. I am of the understanding that it has now been converted to some kind of housing: either lofts (unlikely, given the neighbourhood) or low income units (much more likely). Prior to the renovation's completion, two friends and I made our way into the building. It had a lovely front lobby, large holes in floors where a freight elevator may once have operated, a basement full of a cork-like material, which I believe may have been used in walk-in refrigeration (a suspicion validated by the discovery of a large wooden, insulated door with a freezer style latch attatched to it), and a fantastic view of Yonge St. to the West. Anyway the point of this post is not to brag, since I have no pictures to substantiate my claims. I simply want to ask if anyone has any information on the building. I've scoured the internet repeatedly with no luck. We entered the building in July of 2003. I didn't have a camera with me, and I've lost contact with the girl who did take pictures. I know we're talking about an exploration that happened 4 years ago in a random residential (somewhat sketchy) area, but if anyone can provide any information about the building's history, I'd really appreciate it.

| | | Its amazing how quickly they ripped the back out of it. I don't know for sure, but I think it served as an administrative or diagnostic service for St. Mike's. I'm sure you noticed the 7 storey one next to it that is also being demo'd. It is gutted as well.

Hmm. This exploration was four years ago. . . I don't recall anything undergoing demolition there at the time. My friend told me that a big old place collapsed recently on the other side of Jarvis, but I can't think of what you're referring to beside this particular location. My friend lived right across Shuter from there at the time but moved shortly after, so I've only been past the location once or twice since. Also, I've been in Korea for two years, so I'm not so up to date with what's being demo'ed right now. Thanks for the info, though! I'll keep searching.

| | | ah.. sorry. And I am not even thinking about the right building. I'm thinking Shuter and Victoria. So, basically just ignore me.

| | | You're probably referring to the old sales centre for the Cathedral Square complex that is made up of the two apartment buildings on the North-west side on Mutual. As for the old building, I believe that it's now housing of some sorts. EDIT: Corrected information on Cathedral Square. [last edit 7/19/2007 4:35 AM by Ishi - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by Ishi You're probably referring to the old Cathedral Square condo sales centre that never took off the ground. I believe that it was converted to housing for the city.
|
If we're talking about the same place, any idea what the building might've been before it was a sales centre? I mean, the thing was three or four stories high, with an old walk-in freezer in the basement. I'd estimate the building must be around 50-80 years old. Heading North on Mutual, this building is on the right. The place beside it on Mutual is definitely residential, but too old to be a condo. ;)

| | | You probably remember it having white stucco and glass block windows on the side of the building facing Shuter. It was probably a processing factory at one point, as historic pictures of the area i've seen on the net seem to place the area as mild industrial, as there used to be the old Sears warehouse that was up the street.

| | | Yeah, that sounds like the place. The closest thing I could find online is this picture:
The white building at the far left of this picture is where my buddy used to live, and the building I'm referring to would be immediately to the left of the person who took this picture. Thanks for the info!

| | | I believe those are in use as offices now. There's also a large Salvation Army building going up at Shuter and Jarvis next to your old residence.
