I'm still pretty interested and would like to see its location in relation to everything else.

You've certainly all seen these around the Redoubt. They're marker stones set up by the War Department (Which is what the WD stands for). I've found two marked with broad arrows, and five with roman numerals, II through to VI. I think I know where WD I (1) is...

Question is, has anyone ever seen a WD VII or higher? It would be in the area around the Spion Kop, maybe.

More also:

I was at Connaught Battery yesterday as well. I noticed these at each gun emplacement:

I thought it odd, since the other doors have been removed long ago. So I stuck my phone behind a door, and got this:

276844.jpg (99 kb, 800x600)

I would assume all three gun emplacements have the same space underneath.

This was a generator bunker protected by a gun, N250cc told me where this was. Blackbird and I went up there last summer, not much to it, but really well hidden. If I recall, it was used to power the submarine net?? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd definitely like to know where that hidden tunnel is though. It's been ages since I've been to YR, I think I'm due for another trip.

I'm pretty sure I know where this is, but I've never went down there looking for it.

Also interested in that tunnel. I've never been there, I'm sure. I'd suggest posting it in the DB, but iirc the YR-YSB DB entry is public. If it is public, don't!

Just checked, the YR-YSB entry is now L3 only. I say have at'er.

Are you still a Basic Member? If so, your view of the UE database is quite narrow, and all the cool stuff is hidden from you.

When I marked the locations for these, I was using my cell phone GPS. I'm not too confident about the accuracy, so I'm going to head back to YR today or tomorrow and use my good GPS to confirm the locations. I'll then put the information up as a gallery in the York Shore Battery DB entry, with co-ordinates. Stay tuned.

I'm game to check out Redoubt any time. I just got a new T3i. I'd like to try it out. So if anyone is interested let me know!

Okay, I stuck a gallery up under York Shore Battery. To make it something like a challenge, I didn't put the GPS coordinates up. But the pictures tell the story, and if you've been paying any attention around the Redoubt you'll have no difficulty. If people need the exact location, I can give the numbers out.

Anyone going to the concert on Georges? Should be a fun time.
It would be cool to get a big group to go over to McNabs this summer sometime, or maybe the fall when everyone's not so busy.

You are correct, that would have been the passage for bringing up cartridges from the magazine. Each emplacement had separate chambers underneath that were accessed by an open trench. It was filled in when they built the park on the site.

So here's why I keep coming back to York Redoubt: Something new is always happening there.
Those of you who've been there a lot will recognize this spot immediately.

The area features slugs, and a half dozen very large spiders. There are also four or five spider egg sacs, which could mean a substantial population increase sometime soon.
