anyone produce music using software?
I have been using fruity loops studio for a few years now and recently started using reason 3.0.

What are your thoughts on using software as a medium?

i hear a lot of production companies use Frooty loops professionally. I use acoustic mixcraft just cause its easy to use, but thats mostly for recording live tracks easily.

well I remember when I used to have sound forge 7, and sonic foundry, cakewalk and cubase... those are similar as far as i know.. very good for recording live stuff... but now they have a very similar feature integrated into fruity loops 6 studio. Reason 3.0 is pretty good, but way more complicated. FL6 is easy to use, and it's easy to figure out the features and get them to work.

I used to use Acid something to record. I'm using Sound Forge and Reason 2.5 nowadays though. I'd love to get my hands on Reason 3.0 though...

I used to use Cool Edit Pro, but then I discovered Ableton Live. It is utterly sick. It almost knows what you'd like to do with it, and has a special button to do exactly that...

FL Studio 7 is alright, but it's really just a good platform to see if you like production and want to invest in more powerful programs. Cubase SE, Pro Tools, and Logic are outstanding.

I like FL studio because it has the stuff I need, like the parametric EQ and a few other devices. It's great as a platform for combining samples and it gives you some great tools for altering them to sound original.

Atrix, I must say I have heard a song or two that you made and I like what I heard. Cool video for the solo mission etc.. I like the monk chant tack you have in there.

Check out some of our tracks, google up "the debauch sophisticates" and you will probably find us.

I use Kristal for initial recording and some of the initial EQ balancing, etc, Audacity for other stuff and arranging, and Acoustica Beatcraft as a drum machine if i don't have a real drummer on hand. I use my pedalboard for most of my effects//filtering/compression, as its much nicer than lots of the digital stuff the software offers.

A good portion of the effects offered on music programs are basically the same stuff people have been using for years and years.. Phase shifters, distortion, flanger phasers... the typical old stuff.

reason 3.0 if free Shiv, you should down;oad it on ISOhunt..

The way I look at it, if you limit yourself to one or two programs, you're really limiting your sound, since each one is completely unique. If you're going to use one program, I would suggest Max/MSP, paired with Jitter, especially if you like incorporating video into your productions. There's honestly nothing the program won't do. It also has VST and ReWire support, so...if you can think of something, it can be done. Which, Cycling 74 just makes amazing software in general. Other code based softwares such as ChucK and Csound5 is also decent.

However, these programs can be quite daunting for the amateur recording engineer or musician, since the learning curve is relatively steep, and it assumes basic understanding in computer code. For the hobbyist, I would suggest Live 6. I have found that it is a much more powerful program than Cubase. It has superior VST support, MIDI, and is designed for recording, composing, and performing in real time. It is not quite as "pretty" as Cubase, but to me, that's irrelavent.

For my casual recordings, I use Live 6 ReWired with Reason 3.0 and OCCASIONALLY Max/MSP (if I'm feeling really adventurous at the moment) and then various Native Instrument and FL instruments routed via VST. I use ReCycle for sample editing. I have found this to be the most musically efficient and best sounding virtual set up I have tried. This is, also paired with various hardware, so...you really can't go wrong. You have the best of all worlds, and all of this (except Max/MSP) is publically available as torrents.

Peace and happy recording

i raff out roud. acoustica mixcraft kinda blows.

just got record 1.5..... integrate that shit w/ reason and you're good to go. i prefer ableton live though, sampling is more straightforward and i prefer the mastering on ableton to propellerhead products.
