Do you know a way to get past LW Products Co. grating hatches? There are holes for LW "keys" but I don't know where to get them. Maybe you have an idea? I should've taken pictures, but I don't have an appropriate camera.

Ask the blonde guy. He's good with locks.

I do not. On that picture you can wee where I've tried to improvise and use my own tools to open it with no such luck.

That lid in my photo leads into a small sewer, so I'm not trying everything to get in. However it is nice to find out if I can open those.

So that is a picture of the "key hole"? are these locking manholes somewhere?

This is a locking manhole. I have no need to open it - but I was wondering, panda-chan, if this is indeed what you were talking about. A simple Google search of LW products does not turn up much, a photo is necessary.

The pentagon type boltheads are generally used by electric companies and water authorities.

Newer on surface high voltage transformers have a padlock as a lock and a pentagon bolt recessed inside a cylinder as the access handle. You can also find them on access hatches next to transformers.

Water authorities have them on curb shut-off valves and some manholes that isn't really explorable. My understanding of the purposes is to prevent people from turning on water after its been shut off and preventing illegal dumping by opening the lid.

Yes, the pentagon type bolt is one (which would probably be the easiest to get into) and the other only has a 3/4 inch hold for inserting the "key." I'll try and get a picture. But any ideas on the pentagonal type?

Order a socket online. It should cost you around $20 shipped.

In the last photo, you can see there's a square hole inside the round one. Stick a large flat screwdriver or other metal object into that square hole and twist so it jams in the corners (I use the file on a multitool). My old university had those on the tunnels in a few places, and I've seen them on sewer pump stations and elsewhere. The hatches are usually springloaded and will pop open slightly when you twist the lock, otherwise there should be a recessed metal handle you can pry up. The small rectangular flap at the top of that picture sometimes has a lock under it.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

If he meant that, he would have said it.

I go to the same place he used to, and popped one of those hatches They are spring loaded, and have gas shocks to help open them, so really your only challenge is in getting the latch to actuate. I did it with a flat blade screwdriver, but there's a better way, I'm sure. Also, the one I opened was wired with something, I didn't stick around to find out if it was an alarm though that's the only thing that comes to mind.

Deluxe ones have trunk lid type gas openers, but most of them have a mechanical latch that latches open once opened all the way and you have to pull on it to close.
