How did you pick your tattoo?
< on 2/10/2006 5:48 PM >

Well I am going to get a tattoo. I will scan some of my inspiration. I want a question mak tattoo done in a sketch style. I am getting it for various reasons:

Dr. Who - long time fan
Indian Larry - R.I.P.
"Question authority" and "Why Not"

unfortunately I need to separate it from the riddler so I want it harder angled and maybe red or with red outlines.

Anyhow how did others decide?

On my left upper arm, I got a "shadow drake" (legless, winged serpent) - black & tribal. Got it when I was 17 (illegally, and paid for it with old hunting gear...) to represent my untamed side.

Just last night, Anasazi & I went out and got tattoos: mine is a stylized pen nib to represent my quitting my job to go to college for English with the goal of writing and getting published (I've been writing since I was 8, so the focus is more on the getting published side ) and it's on my right upper arm. Ana got her first tattoo, an amazing butterfly with lots of color, right on the back of her neck so that she can hide it with her long hair while she's at work or otherwise doesn't feel it's appropriate to show. It represents her growing up and finally feeling like an adult, with her BS in Biochem & Forensics behind her, working on her Masters, and working an awesome job in an analytical lab putting her degree to use.

On my right wrist I have spider because I was going through a rough time, and although spiders are small they are part of the cycle of life.

On my right arm, I have a cat creature that was one my mum's bracelets. I got it because it makes me think of my mum, and secondly the creature is androgenous but also very feminine which I can relate too. It's not colored in yet, but once I get back I'll figure it out.

My first tattoo I got 2 years ago, I got a maple leaf on my left shoulder blade. I got it becuase well...Im Canadian, and so is our family going back like, pretty far, a ways before Canada was even a country.
Last October I got the Letter A with some vines tattooed on my right wrist. I completely designed the tatoo myself. The letter A being my initial of course.
And the image below is of the tattoo Im getting before Christmas. Its a memorial tattoo for my grandparents. The anchor is because my grandfather was a merchant sailor and a fisherman, and the butterfly because when my grandmother passed away, every time I went to visit her grave there was always a butterfly, just fluttering about where she's placed.
This tattoo was something that I designed myself as well.

I have an eye with a barcode done in black. The Iris is a dark emerald green. The code for the barcode is Caine with a '0'. Designed it myself, and had it placed on my back just below my neck.

These elements were chosen as they all hold meaning within. Be it interests, or beliefs. Any advice I can give is if you want a tattoo, rather than go and pick one off a wall. Sit down and sketch it out. If you can't draw, get with someone who can, share your ideas and have it mapped out.

Mine's just a simple flower...a rose to be percise (yes yes, cliche but psht, bite me)

...it's a five petal rose outline with three thorns. It has somewhat special meaning to me...tis my favourite flower for one, and it's just a flower with so many different interpretations to it (Depending on colour and breed)

The three thorns because three is a lucky number in chinese, and torns just cause.

yea..that's bout it

i have a music note with flames on my upper back. The music note represents my passion for all things music and how i would probably die if i didn't have music. The flames represent my struggles in life and i never give up.

Mine are both Celtic symbols. One is a trinity knot, symbolizing the Wiccan Maiden, Mother, Crone. The tribal in it just looks cool. The other is a Motherhood Heart. Got it after I had my daughter. It's designed so that every time you have a child, you add a dot to it.

Awesome,IrIsHmOm!

My Wiccan representation is on my lower back.I traced it myself and chose purple because it represents protection and spirituality.

My others are a treble clef and roses on one shoulder (my best friend's Dad was once a famed tattoo artist). The other is a blurred, unfortunate rose, heart and name thingy on my other shoulder that desperately needs a cover up (it was a drunken, snap decision kind of tattoo).

Kind of reminds me of my partner's tattoo...

It's also a star but it's done in white ink on her neck and she has "love, mercy oneness, faith, Peace" written on all points...

Thanks. It was done by Billie the Kidd at the Iron Quill in Newark NY. I will have to take another picture and add it now that it's healed. It was only a day old in that shot.

I don't know how I just found this board. HA.

I've got six tattoos currently, and they all have at least some meaning behind them.

Stars and moon going down my right breast ; was going through a hard time in life, and my best friend told me that I shouldn't worry because the moon and stars are always looking out for me. My first tattoo.

Decaying angel wings, very much so a falling from grace theme.

My last name and a stylized 4 leave clover on my left wrist. I'm Irish, and its also to remind me not to get married ( my mother has been 4 times now )

Left Ankle; My "I don't care" bear. The most silly of them.

Right ankle, stylized Irish claddah, the heart for love, the hands for friend ship and the crown for loyalty .

Finally the newest, right shoulder, A jolly rogers in a heart, with wings on the top of the heart, to remind me that no matter who steals my heart I've still got the wings to fly away.
