Remember that Virgin Mary/Madonna sculpture thing made entirely out of elephant shit? It made Rudy Giuliani insane with indignant rage. Or the crucifix submerged in a glass of piss? Art? Or blasphemous shit? Discuss...

Well, I'm not religious but anything made from or immersed in human waste is shit, not art. However, a shitty Virgin Mary...oh how I wax poetic. I am sooooooo going to hell

It was elephant shit. A Virgin Mary made of elephant shit.

I would imagine it would be fairly offensive to anyone particularly religious, including myself, but I just won't go and see it. It honestly really does not bother me. It is not like they are forcing me to look at it. People can do whatever they want, so long as it does not infringe of my, or others rights. And this, disgusting though it may, or may not be, is an excerise in rights, not oppresion of them. More power to them. Art. Albeit questionable in more ways than one.

I think the bigger question here is that why is one material...in this case elephant shit...offensive while another material (e.g. crayon) not offensive. Moreover, elephants are sacred animals. To some, anyway. Is a sacred elephant's shit not also sacred? Is employing the essential waste of one god as an artistic medium offensive? To whom? If we can see the face of Christ in a taco, tomato, corn chip, piece of toast, can we not also see the divine in a lump of shit? Would God condemn the artist for using an available material in the creation of something beautiful?

It depends on the open-mindedness of the person viewing the "art". I like to think of every substance as having some kind of unique properties which may make it visually appealing, regardless of how "gross" others think it is. Sort of the same openness that attracts people to UE.

I think the condemnation would come from the intent of the artist. If the artist is drawing attention to the fact that they think the VM is shit, therefore I am making a statue of her out of elephant crap then maybe God would be pissed. On the other hand, if the shit is a useful and available material and I don't make the material a symbolic focus of the artwork, it might be OK. Being an artist myself, I was interested as to what properties of elephant dung would make it a good medium. Did a search for "elephant dung" and it turns out it is quite the rage with some sculptors and paper makers.

This "style" of art is the equivalent to trolling in the art world. The artist is attempting to gain influence with a certain sect of people, the modern secularists, by attacking their philosophical opponents, the religious traditionals. (I made up the names, but you get the idea). despite what Trixi says about how you look at it. It doesn't change the fact that it is still just a load of crap (pun intended). Not because poop can't be used in art, but because the subject and the medium of the piece clearly reveal unoriginal intentions of the "artist"(I use the term loosely)

Interesting point.

You're speaking of Piss Christ by Andres Serrano? Great piece, beautiful even. The symbolic act of submerging a crucifix into a bottle of one's own piss is pretty potent... but look past that to the beauty of the colours in the photos of this piece. It catches the light nicely. Wether or not it's offensive actually has very little to do with wether something is art... and in fact... sometimes the more offensive it is, the more "powerful" it is considered by the art world.
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pitty To be lookin' at the board, not lookin' at the city. | |

I liked the shit sculpture better. I find Serrano's artwork far less interesting than the stink it caused up on Capitol Hill: http://www.csulb.e...ancamp/361_r7.html Seems like some noisy taxpayers don't take kindly to paying $15,000 to a guy who creates art by pissing in a glass with a crucifix and taking a photo of it. I can take it or leave it.

Perhaps the real art in this case is, in fact, the creation of moral outrage.
