Sinking in raw sewage (or it may have been marsh gas :) )

Today me and "Arnold" went around with our map looking for entrances to the steam tunnels. We found quite a few steam manholes, but they were all rung-less. We actually went into a building (if anyone asked, we were looking for soda machines), but couldn't find stairs to the basement and were getting a little far from the soda machines so we left. Then we saw a small (maybe 4') RCP drain. We decided to follow the stream further downstream to see if it turned into anything bigger. There was a lot of mud around the river, but we kept walking. The mud kept getting worse and it started to smell like sewage. Then we heard rushing water under our feet (which didn't make sense as we were on ground). The next step sent me right through the ground, releasing a stench of biblical proportions. I sunk down to about mid-shin before, using the aid of my friend, I managed to pull my leg out without losing my shoe. That got the blood rushing a bit, and then, for all that trouble, all we found was a 6" PCB. By this time we were getting quite tired of wandering around UVA, so we started to walk home (we'd taken the bus there but were out of money). On the way back I found another drain, this one maybe 4' 6" tall and rectangular. It may turn to be something cool, but we were tired so we left it for another day. This drain was off of Cherry Ave. At one point on Cherry there's a guardrail and deppression in the ground which looks like a riverbed (but with no river in sight). If you walk down this, it ends in a grate, and on the other side of the road there's another guardrail under which lies the new drain.
