As I mentionned in the "What Gear do you Use?" thread I'm looking at investing in some MiniDV gear. Its a good whack of cash and its got to last me long enough to get rich and upgrade so I'm hounding everyone I know for advice. My budget is roughly $2000USD for a camera allowing me a little extra money to buy all those cutesy accessories you end up needing. Right now top contender is a Panasonic AG-DVC30. I'm also looking at the Sony DSC VX2100. I've heard great things about Canon's performance but horrible things about their durability and reliability. I'm also looking at used gear if I can find good stuff. The Sony PD150/170 or the Panasonic DVX100A topping that list. Any advice or pointers would be great and if you're selling or know someone who is, let me know.

Well the thing about Canon's high end DV stuff is *I think* they still use the Autofocus system from Canon's pro photo cameras, which is a bit slow for video use. Other than that, there great cameras. I would go with the Panasonic myself, but Sony once in a while gets my attention.

Got a steal of a deal on a lightly used PD150 off of good old eBay. Can't wait to try it out.

Getting a chance to use the PD150's at college, I'd say they're a damn good buy...

My friend has a Sony VX2000 and it has been an awesome camera, we have had some issues with sound but it was second hand so I am pretty sure thats why. I am planning on getting a camera after this summer and I am on the same budget as you. The Canon GL2 is what I have been looking at and I have read a lot of good about them.

I've heard that Canons are prone to mechanical issues. Indeed I can confirm that I've had tapes jam in an XL-1S. No problems with the Panasonics or Sonys I've used.

If you don't mind my asking, what college are you attending?
