gin
entry by tick
9/18/2005 4:05 AM

So here I am, sitting around drinking gin and tonics, when I realize that very few of my friends know anything about gin, or have ever had a gin and tonic. So what will hopefully follow is a series of informative reviews of my favorite (and not so favorite) gins.

Gin & Tonic:

- put handfull of ice in a tall glass
- fill glass with 1/3 gin, 2/3 tonic water
- squeeze in a lime slice, and drop it in the glass
- consume rapidly

Tanqueray

Tanqueray isn't bad. It's not that great either. But, it's affordable (well, more so than a lot of gins). It has a bit of a piney taste, but it's not nearly as bad as the cheaper gins. And after half a glass, you won't notice the taste anyways.

This is the gin I buy when I'm on a budget. It'll never impress the ladies like Sapphire, but it won't scare them away like Bowmans will, hehe.

94.6 proof
$21.90 / .750 L

I'd give it 3 out of five stars, or limes, or olives, or whatever.

Tanqueray Malacca

Most gin tastes like a pine tree. This is because of the Juniper berries used to flavor it. Some are more piney than others. Tanqueray Malacca tastes like a lemon. Seriously, someone fucked up and made a gin that tastes like a lemon.

Do not purchase this gin with the intentions of making gin and tonics. It may be good with lemon slices instead of lime, I don't know. And it makes a decent martini with lemon peel instead of an olive. But really, it's just not my cup of tea gin.

I don't know the proof or the price, because Virginia ABC store don't sell the stuff anymore. Personally, I'm glad.

Tanqueray Malacca gets 2 out of 5 lemons limes.

Bombay Sapphire

With every type of liquor, there's one brand that makes an incredible mixed drink - one where you can't taste any harshness or unpleasantness from the liquor. With rum, it's Mount Gay (stop laughing). With gin, it's Bombay Sapphire.

I can't count the number of times some random girl has looked in my liquor cabinet and said "Oh wow, you have Sapphire? That's stuff's really good!" You just don't get compliments like that about Tanqueray or Beefeater.

If you're a gin drinker, buy Bombay Sapphire. If you're not a gin drinker, but are curious... buy Bombay Sapphire. It makes excellent G&T's, martinis, gin & juices, whatever.

94 proof
$23.95 / .750 L

Bombay Sapphire gets 5 out of 5 limes.

edit: Oh yeah, I used to buy this shit by the handle. It's $42 for a 1.75 L. That'll kill your food budget really fast!

Bombay Dry

This stuff is the lower-proof version of Bombay Sapphire. That's means it's 86 proof, instead of 94 proof. the price is also a little lower.

I'll be honest, I really like this gin. I know, 86 proof is a little weak, but Bombay Dry has a really good taste. I mean, not while you're drinking it (although it has the same smoothness as Sapphire), but the after-taste. It's subtle, but good. I think the lower proof means that there's less alcohol to hide the taste of the "botanicals" that give it flavor.

I still prefer Sapphire, but I'd chose this over Tanqueray any day. Wait a sec... this is cheaper than Tanqueray! Excellent.

86 proof
$19.50/ .750 L

Bombay Dry gets 4 out of 5 limes.

Hendrick's

Hendrick's is a Scottish gin, but don't hold that against it. It's expensive, and a relative low proof, so I held off on buying a bottle for a long time. Oh yeah, and it apparently has an "unexpected infusion of cucumber and rose petals" resulting "in a most iconoclastic gin". What the fuck?

I don't know about the cucumber and roses, but this gin is good. Very good. I mean, it has a lot of flavor (but not a piney flavor), which I'm usually not too big a fan of in a gin (if that makes sense). The flavor is very good though, and makes for a quite tasty gin and tonic.

Also, it has a cool bottle.

88 proof
$32.95/.750 L (Holy shit! It used to not be this expensive!)

Hendrick's gets 5 out of 5 limes.

Tanqueray No. Ten

Tanqueray Number Ten is supposed to be a high-class gin... the good stuff. People will be impressed to see it in your liquor cabinet. It has a nice bottle. It's expensive.

Fuck. I'm convinced that Tanqueray just mixes Malacca with their regular gin, and slaps an obscene price tag on it. Maybe I'm too picky, maybe I'm retarded, maybe I expect more from an expensive gin (maybe I've been spoiled by Sapphire?), I don't know... I just think this gin has an unpleasant flavor. I can't describe it, and maybe it's just my bank account talking, but I'd rather drink regular Tanqueray than this stuff. (Seriously, if you're trying to drop $30+, just spend the extra buck and get Hendricks.)

96 proof
$31.95/.750 L

Tanqueray No. Ten gets 2 out of five limes.

Beefeater

I'll try anything once. And if I don't like it, I reserve the right to never drink it again. I will never drink Beefeater again. Now, it's not that it's complete shit - most people consider it a good middle-of-the-road gin, like Tanqueray - I just think it tastes too much like Pine-Sol and butt. That's it.

Of course, it does make a better gin & tonic than Malacca, but Pine Sol and tonic would probably taste better than Malacca and Tonic, so that's not saying much. I wouldn't make a martini with this stuff, that's why it only gets one lime.

94 proof
$20.95/.750 L

Beefeater gets 1 out of 5 limes.

Today a friend of mine drank a liter of Tanqueray before noon. I spent a good part of the afternoon cleaning up the blood. When he woke up he switched to beer.

Well, I looked through my collection of old gin bottles, and the only gins I've bought but failed to mention here are Citadelle and Daresburys. It been forever since I drank either of them, so I can't remember enough to even give half-ass reviews, but Citadelle = good, Daresburys = bad.

And here are my overall rankings:

1) Bombay Sapphire (5 limes)
2) Hendricks (5 limes)
3) Citadelle (4 limes)
4) Bombay Dry (4 limes)
5) Tanqueray (3 limes)
6) Tanqueray Ten (2 limes)
7) Daresburys (2 limes)
8) Tanqueray Malacca (2 lemons)
9) Beefeater (1 lime)

Now go put this knowledge to good use!

Plymouth Gin

I'm pretty wasted, so bear with me here.

I bought Plymouth Gin for the first time today. It's named for the British Plymouth, not the Yankee Plymouth. Apparently, the Pilgrims left from Plymouth, England, and partied at this abandoned monestary before setting sail to the New World. And by 'abandoned monestary', I mean gin distillary. On a related note, the Jamestown colony was founded 13 years before the Pilgrims yankeed their way into the history books, so everyone in New England can kiss my ass.

Oh yeah, the gin. Suprisingly, Plymouth Gin doesn't suck. It's available in regluar strength (82.4 proof) and Navy proof (114 proof, fuck yeah). Tragically, the Navy proof isn't available in Virginia at this time. Maybe it's available in New England? I don't know.

Like I said, the gin doesn't suck. It's actually a lot like Bombay Dry, but with more of an 'earthy' kind of aftertaste (if that makes sense). It's not bad. I just wish the regular strength wasn't so weak.

82.4 proof
$28/.750 L or so

Plymouth gets 4 out of 5 limes.
