UNB Tunnel History 1001

I suppose some history on the tunnel system may be in order.

First I would like to point out that there are two tunnel systems in the Fredericton area.

The University Of New Brunswick Steam/Utility Tunnels

UNB Created these underground spaces around 1960 they cris-cross campus and contain steam pipes, network cable, power lines, phone lines, water lines and Fiber Optic Cable. The very in size, from crawl tunnels, to tunnels large enough to drive a Civic through.

I give 1960 as a general date for the creation of these tunnels, but it is more then possible that some of the tunnels were created earlier then this. A quick inspection of the cornerstones, of campus buildings would indicate a great deal of construction happening in the 1960's, however, there are also a great number of buildings that date earlier then the 60's, and in fact go back as early as the late 1800's.

Rumors and Lore

Public Tunnels

The first rumor that I actually have heard about the campus tunnels was, that they used to be used by the general public to get from building to building, but sometime in the 70s they were shut off from general use because they couldn't be properly secured (meaning there were alot of 'assults'). I can say without any doubt that the utility tunnels were never used by the general public, there design is just to sketchy and dangerous to have ever been used by the public.

However, just today I have thought that there actually maybe a second set of tunnels in UNB that were once used by the public. (more on this later)

Worship/Hobos

Of course there are countless stories about hobo's and satan worshipers being in the tunnels. There is no evidence of this.
