Demented Bike Rides?

I just got home from 6 solo days on the road with Mr. Trek... Montreal to Ivy Lea and back. 575 kms in 4 and a half days of riding, with the highlight of the trip being a couple of nights of doing pretty much nothing other than eating, drinking beer, and being feasted upon by the insects on one of the Thousand Islands. Lots of cool stuff to check out on this route, including the Loyalist Ontario towns along the Saint Lawrence, people that actually listen to country music (whoa!), vast areas inundated by the Seaway works of the late 1950s, ancient canal works that predate the Seaway, and an astounding array of aquatic wildlife. It was all good fun when all is said and done, but I gotta tell ya, my arse and I are not on talking terms tonight, at all, and I don't think that they will be anytime soon Thank god I'll be crashing in my own bed tonight.

Anybody else here partake in this particular flavour of madness? Or am I the only nutbar on here that lives on top of his bicycle seat for more than one day at a time?

Way to resuscitate a dead thread, tbone!

I didn't take too many pics of this particular trip, but I uploaded some from a similar trip last summer to Imagestation. This one was from Ottawa to the Thousand Islands then down the river to Montreal...

Even though I ride like a maniac, I'm not really big on biking gear and accessories. When I started doing the bike camping thing I used a regular Raleigh ten-speed racing bike. Pain in the ass keeping it upright when fully loaded. When I crashed that bike, I broke down and dropped $1500 on a Trek 520 touring bike. A heavy duty steel frame, and it being lower to the ground than a racing bike makes lugging the beer, gear and whatnot less of a burden. It's not the best bike for day to day riding though (I'm a tall bastard and could use a bigger frame).

Besides the bike, a tool kit, a solid rack, a couple of saddle bags and a whack of bungie cords is all you really need.
