Grand Hotel in Dallas

Anyone have any info on the Old Grand Hotel in downtown Dallas in regards to UE? It's slated for renovation from what I am hearing and would love to get it photographed before it's stripped of everything. When it closed they left everything in place, beds made, etc... just like they'd be back the next day so to speak.

Drop me a line or reply if you have any info. I'm going to do some scouting hopefully This saturday morning.

I am not sure which one that is but I know Mox25 and I drove around Dallas looking at various buildings for future exploration. I could have sworn I saw that on our hunt. Is it across from or near The Merc which is downtown as well?
The one I can recall was The Hotel Dallas-Mockingbird on W. Mockingbird Ln. Not sure what is in store for it but it looked promising.

Have a good trip Saturday!

For what it's worth, every time I've been by it's been sealed up very tight. There's still power on, so there's a good chance there's alarms if you get in.

I do want to check it out if there's a way in though.

There's been a beige Honda Accord parked in front of it for quite awhile - I think the car was ditched awhile back or just parked to give the impression that someone is there.

I got a phone number off the front door today and its answered with a message saying "the grand hotel, please leave a message". I may just approach it as wanting to do some photo work before it's gutted out. We'll see how it goes. For what it's worth it also has signs posted that there dogs inside although I dont know if its true or not. If I do get them to let me do a tour I will post it here an if a couple people want to go maybe we can work something out.

I also may have just gotten the okay to do a shoot at the old Ambassador hotel. It's still fully functioning, although not as a hotel but some type of religious training center. They have done an incredible job at maintaining the place though.

The hotel is currently owned by Hamsher, Int. It is supposedly going to be rennovated and turned into low-income housing. I have tried many times to get someone to answer the door, however, I don't believe anyone is there at all. I think they move the little Honda Accord to look like someone is in and out. I am gonna just sit around and stake out that car to see if anyone actually comes out. I have been up in the entrance that is up on the terrace. And yes, there is a dog. I finally got the balls to just jump up there and sneak in, to no avail, because when I actually got in the door, I was looking out to see if anyone saw me, and I heard claws clicking on the floor. A big ass dog came out of nowhere and I got out of, and closed, the door before he/she could get to me. I then waited by the gate on the terrace for no cars to go by, and I sneaked out and jumped down and took the fuck off. A homeless dude asked me what I was doing and I told him my grandfather had been in there while it was still open and they had left their wedding certificate there, and I went back to get it. Okay, so lame story, but whatever...

Hmmm dont really feel like getting eaten by a dog today. I guess I will have to try and reach the owners and see if I can do som,e "urban Touring", I like that term btw 2x!. With my Construction Management work and my Photography work I can sometimes get some pretty good access to places. I had never thought of what to call it! I really want to shoot this building before it's gutted out. I have also approached people on another project to document a restoration and conversion but will wait to give more details until I see if I get the job or not, but I'm sure if it goes through some people will be interested!

As far as Hamsher goes they still own it, barely kept from losing it to the city of Dallas in foreclosure but cut a deal in january by giving the city a parking garage and land in exchange for back taxes but I think it's someone else looking at doing the re-hab with Hamsher still an investor is what I am hearing, there putting up the building and the other company is financing the work. Assuming they can cut a deal with the city on some incentives.

Low income housing? This place can do better than that..

I dont believe HUD or anyone else would do that in the Grand. Too much involved in refitting and remodeling an old hotel for family type residences (1 Bedroom 1 bath w/no kitchens???) they'd have to gut the interior and start all over. And besides the federal court already cleared the way to move them all into upscale apartments in far North Dallas and Addison at your expense.

Can you imagine the conditions if they did or how about the high rise coffinail explored off Mockingbird. High rise ghettos indeed my man.

If history follows true to course U.S. citizens living on entitlements or in subsidized housing dont want to live in ghettos, barracks, converted high rise hotels or abandoned military bases (California tried all that). No they want to live out at Bent Tree or Stone Briar in the $1000 a month apartments off the tollway. Hey why not they aint payin for it you are.

I'm bettin' the Grand is gonna join the Adams Hat and others as the new, hip urbane Yuppie lofts complete with it's own gourmet convenience store and sushi bar.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

i talked to a person on the city planning commission a while back about another famous landmark on the same street that is being turned into high-dollar lofts, and he volunteered some info about El Grande. there is an abundance of expensive digs downtown; however, there isn't much in the realm of affordability except for manor house and piggly wiggly. the city wants to make the grand "affordable" housing, NOT section 8 or subsidized housing. one of the main reasons behind this plan is the 8 foot ceilings are not attractive to the high-end user, and it would be VERY cost prohibitive to convert the grand to higher ceilings (not to mention doubling the height of the ceilings would halve the square footage}, so, they intend to make them attractive to the average downtown worker. the boss will live at the merc, the employees at the grand, and everyone gets a little more condensed and easier to shuttle around.
in reality though, city officials lie so much, it's hard to tell. it could wind up being another "let's turn the grand into the plains of the serengeti to keep the downtrodden voters happy". i wouldn't put it past them. look at the brand-new, architecturally pleasing units they are replacing the projects with. apparently, welfare moms and crack dealers just need more "bling" at the public expense. now, excuse me while i go puke and pull my hair out.

reality is the fine line between paranoia and denial

thats why I tune in here twice a day at least, too funny man too funny !!!!!

I love the current Dallas motto or mission statement: "Dallas the city that works" too frickin funny man...

Hey sounds like the Merc deal washed out didnt it? The Cliff Tower got that $4 mil because of the Dallas Gateway project w.e.t.f. that is. I think Dallas only works when the city council is getting enough kickbacks and payoffs to keep the wheels greased, now that the FBI is draggin files out of their offices nothings getting done.

OUCH!
If only this kind of honesty were allowed in the council chambers.
Anybody get a shot of the mosaic compass on the OCT 10th floor yet?

Just an FYI, if you guys haven't looked at the UE DB entries lately.

There was an article in today's (July 16) Dallas Morning News about the parking garage across from the hotel. A lot (over 200) of the gold/aluminum rings on the structure have been stolen - expect a lot more police activity in the area.

This goes for the garage, the hotel, and I assume the Merc as well.

For the garage DB entry I pasted the full article into "media coverage" with a link to the original article (after today you have to be registered on dallasnews.com to pull it up). I'll update the entries for the hotel and merc with notes inside the stories as well.

if you build it (out of aluminum)
they will come (and steal it)

theyre stealing perfectly good working multi-ton central A/C units worth $7000 or $8000 so they can strip the copper and aluminum out to sell for a few bucks

recycle reduce re-use man
