The Bad Drain
entry by Gatsby
5/2/2005 12:42 AM

For years now, I've referred to this drain as "that one drain we almost died in". Me and a couple of companions almost froze to death, and we nearly had to swim out of the outfall because we had a REALLY hard time climbing the rope.
Then, somewhat recently, Frozen actually DID have to swim out. The name of the drain changed to "Frozen's Drain".
THEN, Ofberenonehand's friend Tom got trapped in there in a different section and couldn't get out without our help. At that point, the name changed to "Death Trap Drain".
NOW, after friday night, I will call it "The Bad Drain", because nothing but bad things ever seem to happen in there.

D_Wrex, Ofberenonehand and I went to a shaft in ****** Park, which we assume is a section of The Bad Drain, and tied a rope on the last rung (the shaft comes directly out of the middle of the ceiling, and it's too high to jump to).
Then we drove to the outfall and tied a rope to get in that way. Our goal was to find our previously tied rope. This was to be great fun and non-stop excitement.
As it turned out, we ended up walking 5 miles and realizing we were too far for this to be the right tunnel. We should have taken a right at the first Y, then taken a left at the next Y. I'll try that next time.

I can't really describe how it feels to be cold, soaking wet, and extremely worn out after walking 5 miles against the current, only to realize that the only way out was to walk another 5 miles back to the outfall. The tunnel never got any smaller after that first Y - it was still HUGE! When we turned around, it still went off into the darkness for who knows how long.

The most fun and extreme excitement that we had was the insane conversations we had on the trot back. This is actually my favorite part of draining. We started thinking about things like "What if this pipe was slowly spinning like the ones in funhouses?" "What if we looked up and saw water running on the ceiling just like down here?" Ofberenonehand ranted on and on about the craziest things. Me and D just listened, 'cause we knew he was going insane and it's fun to listen to crazy people talk.

THEN, D_Wrex started singing Creed songs at full volume. Insanity tugged at his heels, too. He must have been possessed or something, because he sounded exactly like the recordings.

When we finally got back to the outfall, we were SO tired that we almost couldn't even stand up. We suddenly realized something that scared the piss out of us. When we descended into the outfall, Ofberenonehand had tied a certain type of knot that was supposed to be able to be yanked loose after you climb down - so we wouldn't have to drive back to retrieve it later, as we were going to exit through the shaft that we had tied up a rope to climb out. When we got down, he found that he couldn't pull the rope down. He tried really hard.
Now, since we never did find the exit shaft, we had no option but the outfall. If he had been able to pull the rope down, we would have had to swim out.

Overall, my body wasn't quite as cold, but my feet were way colder.
Two years ago though, Joe, Dave and I were the coldest any of us had ever been!
