The derelict ward
entry by Kakesu

Since last year I've been a health care assistant at my local hospital. An excellent perk of the job is that I get to work in the most interesting bit of architecture for miles around. It's such an amazing space, just walking between wards is a joy. Well anyway, yesterday after work I noticed that one of the wards in the old wing had closed. Obviously, the closure of a ward isn't something throw parties over, but the husk of the place (which I visited this evening) was an indescribably atmospheric place to explore.

Making comparisons to Brookhaven or Alchemia would be super-crass, but the thoughts were unavoidable. I half expected the space to be verging on sinister, but once inside, the ward had a feeling of warmth and homeliness. A place in a state of rest. People had gone there to get better or to be comfortable for decades, and even striped down the ward still radiated feelings of sanctuary. If it weren't a live site outside (Getting caught there in uniform would have been embarrassing to say the least), I would have stayed for hours. All in all though, I think I spent maybe twenty minutes happily wondering around. Still, I'd borrowed my sisters camera for the visit, and hopefully I'll have captured something of the essence of the place on film. I don't know how long the ward will stay in it's current state, but I'm incredibly glad I had the opportunity to experience this impermanent abandonment.
