Hiawatha bldg.
entry by Gatsby
4/24/2005 11:41 PM

About 3 months ago while driving down Hiawatha Ave, I noticed a building that definitely appeared to be abandoned. I didn't have time to check it out then, but a couple of weeks later, I remembered it and PM'd Asylunt to see if he'd like to join me for scouting. Unfortunately, he was busy that night and we didn't end up going.
I actually forgot all about it until last week! D_Wrex and I scouted it out and found a way in, but we didn't have time for an exploration.
On Wednesday, GreyKat, D_Wrex, Martin and I went back to explore it. We were slightly nervous of what or who might be lurking inside, as it lies on the edge of a not-so-desirable neighborhood. We were cautious as we entered, always ready to kick a defensive crackhead in the face.
Upon being fully inside, we began to feel better and more excited. There was a long tunnel going off to the left and an adjacent room in front of us with a bathroom, another long tunnel, and stairs. We covered this level, then headed up. The ground level was basically two large rooms with 20-25 foot ceilings. One of the two rooms was HUGE! It was almost completely empty, reminiscent of an abandoned warehouse. We believe now that it was some kind of powerhouse because of various clues picked up throughout. GreyKat and D_Wrex are really good at figuring out these types of things.
The third floor, which was also the top floor, was the same as the previous one, except it was even more empty, thus giving it an even more cavernous feeling. It was pretty cool, actually. We noticed that the roof access hatch was open, and the ladder was in superb working order, so we ascended.
We took out our cameras and began shooting traffic trails. We didn't talk much on the roof, but I think we were all thinking the same thing - WE LOVE EXPLORING!!
Back down on the ground floor, we took out our cameras once again for some creative photography. The scene we chose for most of our shots was the smaller of the two rooms, looking in the direction of the stairs, which were very photogenic and a good place for self-portraits and whatnot. This was the night that D coined the phrase "rave shot". One of his experimental shots involved an open shutter recording us running wildly about the room, twirling our headlamps as we tripped over each other in the surreal, confusing moment, thus producing on film what appeared to be a crazy rave or something.

Good times.

The whole thing was fun. I was a bit upset at not finding any crack heads to bust up though. Maybe another time. Heres that pic I was telling you about Gatsby.

I wish I would've stayed more still - I moved a little during your exposure because I thought you were done - whoops!

I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop.

Speaking of raves, Mr. X, Flame, and I were at Bunge again the other day and there was a rave going on in the middle of the silo things. Yes, DJ with his turntables and everything. Not more than 20 people, though.

edit: the funny part was when they spotted us on the roof looking down at them!
