Look closely at the pictures: there's a Satanic element to the tunnel wall. Look very very closely. Seriously.

(Big smile) A very intriguing question. Perhaps they/it was used during prohibition by the rumrunners. My brother in laws parents house, (in the Oak Bay area) was owned at one time by one of the major 'cigarette boat ownin' badass rum runners themselves. Not sayin the tunnel is in Oak Bay, or that it's not...

I guess all those downtown crazies/panners/vagrants are on to something. Odd, that...

Do you really think those crazies/panners/vagrants have been in that tunnel?

Put it this way: if 5 crazies can make their way down there loaded with camera gear and a bad-assed 10 million candle-power flashlight, all things are possible.

True enough....... in the few photos that were posted, I didn't see any of the usual "evidence" of the homeless population being down there.

That's better, as in 'epic saga', well maybe not Ben Hur, or Lawrence of Arabia, but anyway... I like your positive 'tude. So I have 6.66 Pesos 4U, if you tell me how you inverted the Questioni Mark? I'm 2 Lazy 2 look it up in my Majick Mac book, (which may not even contain this punctual ubercoolness). Been in the school lately? And hey, I didn't mean to be a hard ass earlier, in my PM, am just sorta cautious. Nuff said. I'll show you some weird stuff sometime. But I can't talk about the tunnels, just because.

6.66 Pesos hey? Hows about 6.66 pesos & a bottle of mescal. I've eaten the worm before at a "mexican theme party" (See below) I thought It was authentic. My inflated ego caused by several oz of tequilla helped me swallow it. I found out later that the worm is only a marketing gimmick started in the 50s... i felt much less cool the morning after and questioned my motives and willingness do it again... Then again, I've done far dumber things twice.

Hardass, honestly never crossed my mind. I dont expect handouts, nor do I want them, a kick in the right direction is always helpful to get my balls rolling tho. Which is pretty much what I get from here so I am happy "'tude" eagerness & a raging explore-on keep me looking.

Since you are a fellow mac lover and macs rule I will tell you for free. Try option+shift+?

Anyway... way off topic.. tunnels? Huh?

Well...we're all going to be worm food eventually. It's nice that The Lord has provided the means to reverse that rule...if only temporarily...in the form of a buzz-inducing Mescal worm-eating moment.

I spoke with a stuttering wino over the weekend...and it was he who identified himself as a 'stuttering wino' and not me, in case you're interested...this was down on Store Street, not far from a neat little location JPeterman, A. Lien and myself visited some time ago...and this fellow told me a rather interesting tale about the tunnel under this particular street. He pointed to a manhole cover and told me that the city 'appropriated' the tunnel as a storm drain decades ago, and though the walls and general structure are still sound, the large pipe that runs through the space now has rendered the tunnel somewhat unpleasant as a dwelling environment. He told me that when he was a kid growing up in Fernwood, he and his friends would sneak into a tunnel that started on Harald Street, cut down from Store Street and went all the way to the Janion Hotel. At that point, he said, there was a dog-legged turn, which he described as a weird angle that took the tunnel NOT towards Johnson Street, but to Warf Street. I asked about a Johnson Street/Pandora Street tunnel and he told me that those were more closely related to the various building's extended basement spaces.

He didn't actually say 'extended basement spaces,' but I understood that's what he meant. I asked if these were connected to the tunnel he was talking about, and he said he remembers seeing piles of timber and old bricks in the Store Street tunnel, and that he thought that someone had smashed a hole in a wall to connect these two separate entities.

I took all this information...anecdotal as it may be...and rechecked my records, and there were a couple of contradictions, but on second glance, the notes I have re: Harald Street dovetail nicely with what Stuttering Wino told me.

I asked if he knew anything concerning the Northern Junk Co. building, and he shrugged. 'Locked tighter than a drum," he said. I told him that someone once suggested to me that the Victoria police store riot gear/weapons in there, and he laughed. The police maintain a presence around there, he told me, because it's a popular place for drug users. "They're ruining this city with that stuff," he told me (and I'm quoting him directly here). "Young kids all messed up, ruining their lives with crystal meth. Imagine destroying yourself like that."

Have a chance to pop the manhole? To the best of your knowledge, is there a traversable... albeit "unpleasant" drain beneath Store St.? My definition of dwelling and traversing is very different.

The "large pipe that runs through the space now" Would this pipe not be something watermain or sanitary related rather than storm drain? (Being that it is within an enclosed pipe within an open cavity) or maybe either water or sewage in a pipe that runs within a drain "tunnel", coexisting together in sub-terrainian urban utility harmony? (Beautiful!)

I am going completely out on a limb here.. but when were water-mains first installed in downtown core?.. late 1800's/early 1900's? (or pressurized fire hydrant systems sprung up around that time as well i believe) If so, would this passage pre-date that, is it possible that at that time, the city would have placed such utilities into already existing tunnel beneith Store St. rather than digging a new trench?
