Posted by meggaman Im, wondering if this corridor in downtown victoria leads to the tunnels , lots of odd shaped doors ,with big keyholes at the end of it ,and it was starting to get dark out ,,

Was there some odd, cryptic language down that alley too? This requires further exploration!

Fan Tan Alley? Not likely. Keep looking.

this corridor has some doors and windows on the right,I looked into one of the windows and saw that the place has a wood plank floor ,this must mean there is a basement down below ,i wonder if the tunnels are under there,,this place is close to the shore too,,

That's not Goosebumps... you may want to go to the clinic...

this building has no rear on it ,,just the front is being saved by steel beams i looked around the area and just saw huge piles of dirt ,doesn't look like any tunnels were there ,at the back of this place is a concrete slab left in tact i was looking for a trap door or anything that seemed like a entrance ,then i herd some noise ,,

Yep. I talked to a construction worker who told me that the city was having problems with contaminated soil in both the area behind/beside where that *rubble* now is, as well as the old parking lot behind crystal gardens. *I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before in this thread* This now excavated parking lot is said to have the entrance (theres no way your getting in) to a small tunnel used for carting loads of dirty and clean linens back and forth from the old steam plant to the Empress Hotel's basement. While I was walking by I stopped to talk to the construction/excavation manager of the site and was pretty sure that the old linen factory was actually 1 block away from crystal gardens->to just behind St. Marys (now all renovated, except for X wing) Come to think of it I remember them doing alot of construction there, and there was an huge old brick smoke stack. If anyone goes by that area now they will see the mess that the soil contamination is causing. Also.....Anyone checked out St. Anne's Academy? Any utility tunnels there?

Peterman, are you talking about that slab behind the budget rental office that's behind the empress? Or about the burned out building the n00b is talking about?

Probably security. That facade is sketchy. The support beams are there to support the structure, lest it collapse and crush you to death. It would be a bad thing if that happened, if only because the owners would get sued. And the future development would be haunted by your ghost, and that would effect unit sales, and property taxes, and tourism, and so on and so on. You should have checked out the building before it burned down. Or you can take a look at the pics I posted. The thread is titled "Pandora Street Squat."

this thread has been... um... "interesting". new to the board, never really thought much of the tunnel legends but thinking back i wish I'd thought of it when a buddy and I scaled into the cop shop rubble on Fisgard a couple years ago. We had gone to take b/w photos since we were both into photography, but when I got there I realized my roommate had used up my whole brand new roll of film. Grrrrrrr... never made it back before they finished demolishing it. Anyway... We were mostly climbing around to the top part of the building and around the middle guts & old cells... never thought to explore the basement since neither of us brought a flash (prefer to use aperture settings etc...) and we were after all there to take pictures. I doubt there would've been much down there anyway. Mavrix reminds me of a guy I used to know who tried to impress us by creating a storm with his mind. It didn't work and he was most disapointed. lol. Megga... neat doorknob. Kubla is a bit of one. Where's that from?

Ohh now you done it... For the "newbies?" or anyone else looking to begin exploring Victoria, see if you can get ahold of this:
Good stuff for beginners. On another note... I used to take martial arts in Chinatown. If your looking at the gates on Fisgard, look up and to the left and you'll see a bunch of weapons/bowstaffs/swords in the windows. While I was practicing there we used to train outside in a courtyard with a couple of dark connecting alleys. I'm a damn fool for not taking advantage of being there to take pictures. I wasn't really into this back then. Anyways wanna join martial arts to get some access back there? It's quite the scheme, otherwise I wouldnt suggest bothering them about a private tour.

haha. done what? called kubla a doorknob? indeed I did (or the photo did?). I'm sure our mr. meggaman here was only poking fun about fan tan alley. Besides, my comment was just a friendly elbow in the ribs... no serious offense taken I hope. anyway, no threat here, you guys keep your seniority in the field... but I have lived in Vic for over ten years, heard/read much history, and done a fair share of nosing around in places I wasn't really supposed to be. You guys want to be undercova gangstas, that's cool by me. You wanna medal?

So anyway, I went yesterday evening to investigate The Thing on the Doorstep's alleged tunnel entrance. We took some pictures and I'll include two of them here. The entrance/doorway is about 8 feet high and has an arched top made out of brick. We think it is far too large an entrance to be any sort of "coal chute". The concrete seems like it was done within the last 50 years and is very solid. The Thing on the Doorstep also had some photo's in a book from as far back as roughly 1900 showing his building with the street at its current height. We decided that we should drill some test holes in the concrete to see if it is in fact hollow on the other side. It may be a few days before we do this initial test. More to come!

These things are all over Old Town. You'll find them in Market Square. You'll find them up near The Patch. You'll find them in damned near every building built circa 1860 in the downtown area. They are part of the building basement, and extend (or extended as most have been back-filled and sealed) under the sidewalks around the city. Some are still open. Some connect to other extensions. It is rumoured that some are intact and connect via a long, narrow passage (e.g. Warf St. up Pandora). If you go into that gardening shop...can't recall the name...near Market Square, and descend to the basement level, you will discover one or two sealed arches.

None taken at all. Though I'd probably feel better about it if you actually posted something that contributed to the thread rather than start by taking the piss out of me.
