Hey, this is a notice regarding something long- forgotten about Vic High. Tours of the boiler rooms, tunnels, under the stairs, and sometimes even the rifle range are offered for free, by the people who run the school archives. The folks in the archives stopped doing tours long ago, due to waning interest, but upon Skipideedoo and Ginger's request, they said that they would love to start doing tours again!!
The tour times are limited: only on Tuesdays before noon.
You must notify the folks in the archives a week before; so before noon on the Tuesday before.
They're really nice people.
Maximum of 6 people at a time.
If you are a high school student, a note from your homeroom teacher is required (well, sort of).
To get to the archives, go up to the school via Vining street cul-de-sac. There are two doorways. One is at the edge of the old building; the other is where the new building meets old. Go into the left doorway(to old building). To the left is a small sign saying 'archives'.
I think there is a tour scheduled for this coming tuesday; we have room for 2 more. If a lot of people are interested, i can ask if multiple tours can be done on the same day.

By the way, got into another room in Vic high, and this won't be on the tour: the '60's built disco party room. Yep, that's right. Behind a door with a shroomed out picture on it, with weird costumes inside, you go up through a trap door in the ceiling. Inside....a nude mannequin, a disco ball, and a table. It's so lame.... it's awesome.

Good one NK. A friend took the tour years ago. He says there was never a pool in the basement, but because the walls are tile, could be the reason for the rumor.
I'll believe there's no pool when I don't see it.

Cool tunnel in Nanaimo, hilarious how they named it. Rum Runners escape route (the likely more famous use) might attract attention.

Hey all......got in the Boiler Room, finally!!No pics; i only got into main room because janitors were right around the corner. Although i'm sure we'll get to see a LOT more with the tour. Also....if anyone wants to join us Vic High Marauders(VHM)....that shaft we were talking about, you know how we said you couldn't go up that far? Well, the hole got widened, and you can now access the chamber above, which probably leads upwards into more chambers. This is the same shaft that Lien went into with me. YAYYY!!!!

Okay.......when i read the whole thread i must have missed this.......sorry to bring up old stories.....but, i just realized when reading this old post of JPeterman's.....
"Mmm intriguing. I too have recently received a morsel of information pertaining to a tunnel u.t.g.c. An foreign student attending the same post secondary school as me told me about a time not long ago when he was waiting to pick up his friend from work in the inner harbour. It was about 3 in the morning and he was parked in his car nearby where the horse & carriage business runs just to the right of the parliament buildings (if you are looking from the front). He saw a small structure nearby the lawns which looked like a tool shed or outhouse...very small and ratty looking. Out came about 10 women dressed in long dark robes. One of the women, turned her head to clearly look at him/his car. She had a stark white streak in her hair and carried an uncomfortably oversized bag...He said there was no way that amount of people could have fit in the tiny 4x4foot structure. He came back a couple of days later to see that the structure was gone and there was a fresh square shape of neatly cut turf in the exact location of shed.

He was telling me in the middle of lecture. I said "You and I have GOT to talk after class" He said that since that night he believes there has been two assassination attempts made on his life. On two separate occasions he has nearly been squashed against a buildings side while riding his bike to and from work late at night. He swears to me it was the exact same maroon Lexus both times.

Next stop. Parliament lawns. In the night."

I was out with skipideedoo downtown a while back, and he said that he say this weird trap door/portal on the lawn of the legislature, and then when he went back later, the same exact spot was covered with freshly cut sod. We were going to check it out, but we'd been up to exploring shit all night and were freezing.
I'm going to check this out, now that i've read JP's old post......it sounds like there could always be freshly cut sod over this entrance, just waiting to be lifted?????????

Oh, and by the way, had a nice weekend with beer? If anyone wants to join me exploring, i'll soon be having a midterm holiday, starting tomorrow afternoon.

Well, with exams done (fuck yeah!), popped into Victoria archives, ended up spending three hours in there. Got a shitload of info, too. They were real nice to me. Found the exact locations of every water cistern (pre-1892); the precise locations of the opium factories, which could help me find more tunnels; the engineering department gave me a free 30 page book of every single storm drain in the city showing every manhole; got to see all the original 100 year old maps of the drains. Learned about some big drains that I'd never heard of before, and I can now also officially confirm that there was a rifle range on Dallas Road, according to the 1906 Annual report. (Was there even controversy over this? Whatevahhh).
Spent the rest of the day talking to business owners, and as a result i have now learned of the exact precise location of the fabled 'catacombs'......(FINALLY!). Also was talking to a guy who said that S.J. Willis used to be a prison, and that if you look in a particular spot, you can still get a good peep of the cells.
Also heard of a copper mine somewhere near Royal Roads/West shore (????), with shafts big enough to drive a semi through. So i'll soon be heading to Colwood to check out their archives.....i'd love to get in. Now i just gotta get some plans made up to explore this shit!! I'm thinking of doing the burrow of the beast once the weather gets nice; i've aqcuired some good info on that drain. Maybe now that i'm done with math course from hell (hopefully for now), i'll have some time to speak with the homeless people that know these nooks and crannies best.
cheers!!!

Well, went downtown today.....got into some neat little chinese alleyways that are usually locked up. Was talking to homeless people......learned of a homeless gentleman who calls himself 'Gizmo'(????). Apparently, he has been inside a neat place. Has anyone had the opportunity to meet him yet? Just curious. PM me if you would like to meet with him with me.....his friends said he was a nice guy.
Have been combing through all my info from the archives.....that map book of the storm drains is proving to be pure gold.

Is Gizmo related to Shakey? Or maybe Freak, Stillborn or Jemmy? All of these peeps have told me about their experiences inside the Chinese tunnels.

Was out downtown today. Trying to locate particular homeless folks takes time, it seems. Ran into Bob and a friend of his. They both said that they knew KK and JP. They said they know all of the folks i've been looking for (although i'm also talking to random people too, of course). Forgot to ask about Jemmy and Stillborn, but they had some very interesting info. For starters, they said that tragically, the vast majority of the opium tunnels are sealed off every block by barriers. Sometimes, wire fences are used instead of concrete, so those may be possible to penetrate. They also confirmed that the interesting place that Gizmo got into is still very much accessible, and that (praise the Lord!), it is one of the few remaining fully explorable unmolested tunnels in a particular part of downtown. Bob has been in some neat tunnels, although he said that the ones he's got into have been mostly sealed up. Also learned that the current Streetlink location used to be a slaughterhouse, and the parking lot near the Janion used to be a dump, and is full of artifacts, even jewelry! They also said that a laundry tunnel went under chinatown existed, and that it is connected to the now-sealed off underground 'catacombs'(honey comb like residences for illegal chinese immigrants) that i mentioned in my previous post, which are again connected to a very possibly accessible tunnel which leads to the aboveground catacombs located in an abandoned building. I have acquired two maps of Chinatown, one of 1890 and one of 1908. They show in detail the laundry houses, tailors, and opium factories. Could help in locating the tunnel.
Bob also gave me some useful info on the Burrow of the Beast.
Checked out to see if any of the pre 1892 water cisterns i researched are still there. Went to one of the intersections where one of the 25 000 gallon ones is supposed to be; found a very heavy looking manhole, and peeped through the holes. No echoey sound like the storm drains.....but definitely water below. I'm stoked.
Sorry, no explorations or pics yet! Hopefully soon!
Cheers
NK

Hey all! Hope everyone is doing well.
Explored the Burrow of the Beast. VIA THE OUTFALL. Biiiig mistake. Why? Well, to put it simply, Skipideedoo and i ended up crawling on hands and knees in a frigid soaking wet tunnel for 45 minutes straight in order to get to the good stuff. Not fun. Very claustrophobic down there, although, to be honest, the claustrophobia really didn't bother me. Got to the old chinese section; we liked what we saw. Went to the ends of both directions @ the waterfall. The water wasn't too turdy, which was nice. But man, were we ever soaked!!! On the right hand branch of the tunnel, we came to this interesting and very heavy looking metal door. ??????
Did as much as humanly possible down there. I guess we could've gone up into that smaller drainpipe, but hey, we were miserably cold and that pipe looked faaaar more miserable than the neat old tunnel we were in.
Then we spent another 30 minutes crawling out via the outfall.
Found bits of porcelain, and two very pretty marbles, which i gave to a very pretty girl on the bus.
We went back to Skip's place, dried off, and went back downtown. The day before, skipideedoo had noticed that a manhole (conveniently placed in the middle of a grassy area) was left improperly closed. A tunnel? We decided to investigate.
It was dark out, and while there were people in the area, we weren't too concerned, as we were safely far away from businesses and yuppies. The traffic nearby was very fast moving, and not busy. All we had to watch out for was cops and security guards, none of which we saw. We hauled open the manhole, peered in. A very big space below, indeed. We could clearly make out a walking height tunnel! We decided that i'd take a very quick jump down, a peek, really, while skip spotted. Bad idea. Was wearing clunky steel toed boots. There was a large gap in the steps, and the tunnel was a long way down. To put it simply, i quickly realized in a rather unpleasant manner that there were steps missing.
So we closed the tunnel up properly, and decided that we had better do some planning, and bring good sneakers and rope. Will probably do this tunnel soon!
Were going down another street, won't say which part of town. Lifted a metal plate. Lo and behold, a gorgeous tunnel below!!!And damn dry, too!!! This tunnel looked very cosy. And the manhole is conveniently placed in a sidewalk.
The downsides:
1)You need a crowbar to enter, hate to say it, and,
2)It's very much a 3 AM kind of adventure. We were okay, we did a thorough ground check, no cops, no uniforms, dark out, few people, nobody who seemed to care. But i'd only go in late at night, really. Will explore soon!
