body mod myths

Post any myths that you have heard of...

Myth 1: Getting pierced with a piercing-gun is safe.
NO NO NO!!! Not safe at all! It's like stabbing yourself with a nail! Getting pierced with a needle is 500 times better, and should always be done with a hollow needle. You can't even sterialize those piercing guns at those crummy jewelery shops like Claires or Ardene because they are made out of plastic. The only way you can sterialize something is by putting it in an autoclave machine... not by rinsing it with rubbing achool. And the risk of a blowout and infection will increase.

Flower Power is exactly right. You run a higher risk of infection and excessive scarification. Not only that but the studs are not sharp enough, so it hurts more since you're pretty much crunching through. Mall personell are also not properly trained.

Body Mod myth #2: Piercing is easy to do at home

Not true at all. There are several places where you could do permanent damage or even kill someone if you hit a bad area. Ex: chemical pockets in the nose and eyebrows, nerves in the ears and genital areas etc. I knw someone who lost all feeling after attempting a appadravia genital piercing himself. just save up and do it right or don't do it at all.

I dont think so .. well if the person doing it is an idiot who never took the time to get all the knowledge needed and proper equipement ,your rigth.

Iv seen my old punks friends doing all kind of piercing themself exept genitals ( still possible they done it without saying it ..) without any problems.
And seems people often forget that primitive tribes were doing quite extreme bodymod hundred or thousands years ago without surgical tool ,sterilisation equipement or even good anatomy knowledge.

And lot of piercers doenst know much themself , theres no school or acreditation in Canada for this.

I would never go to a piercing shop, exept maybe for piercing tongue, penis or clits .

I'm sorry but its minor surgery you'e performing. Even ancient tribes had knowledge passed down from generation to generation about how to do it. Most people are ameteurs and do not get taught or learn properly. The only piercing shops I will ever go into are APP certified. Those do exist in canada btw.

Heh how many ARE APP certified... in Montreal there is only 1 even the #1 rated piercing shop in Montreal isn't APP certified! Btw, I agree with Dj, piercing yourself at home isn't an easy thing to do. Not only that, you will be using materials that aren't appropriate for a piercing i.e; safety pin. Piercing shops are there for a reason, if it were to be safe at home to do... then there wouldn't be any. If you have a great knowledge about piercings, then I guess it's fine to determine weather or not you should it yourself. I am with DIY piercings, but when it's not done properly you have nobody to blame but yourself. I have done a few piercings myself, but those were play piercings. You also have to remember with everything you do there is always a risk.

My wife and I have access to piercing needles and dermal punches. She has done several self-pierces including a perfectly straight septum and, with a dermal punch, a clit hood. I pierced her ears with a 10ga piercing needle.
The only self-pierce I did, I did with the help of a pro piercer. He marked it and held the forceps. I pushed the 10ga needle and jewelry through my second frenum.

I'm scared to get dermal punched lol, a piece of flesh taken away from your ear sounds yucky to me! BTW do you buy off BME?

I'm scared of dermal punches too...I have bought locally and from stainless studios...I think it's www.stainlessstudios.com or something and anatometal (www.anatometal.com, I think). I got a needle from a store called Maharajis or something like that in St Paul. My wife reappropriated the dermal punches from the hospital where she works.
