The other day I was riding my bike down some stairs and totally bailed, I ended up rolling down a grass hill. It wasn't too bad, thank god there was grass next to me... it got me thinking though... most wipe outs occur while doing something completley and utterly stupid and that doesnt change the fact that sometimes I ride like I'm completely stupid. anyone have any good wipe outs lately?

I was riding with one hand an a Tim Hortons Ice Capp in the other (highly addictive drink) I hit something, stone pothole, I didnt look but totaly faceplanted into the pavement ripping up my nose and elbow.
Hit by multiple cars, head pushed through a window, I was hit by a train too.
Racing a train (going really slow) on a bike, I qwas riding like an idiot and made it through the gates quick enough but it had picked up speed and sheared my rear wheel in half, I got a scrape on my leg from that.

Not recently, but winter has finally arrived in Chicago, which means a lot of invisible ice on the streets. Plus I recently started riding a fixed-gear single speed, so my annual "flip over my handlebars, land on my ass, fuck up my knee and almost get hit by a car that's skidding on the ice" ritual that I perform every year to start my winter cycling season cannot be far away!
I can't wait...

Not since I was fifteen years old actually (34 now). But that one darn near killed me. I didn't ride bikes at all for almost 15 years after that...

I was riding down a long hill on a gravel road and lost control of the bike. I went over the handlebars, and broke my collarbone as well as giving my head a good whack and breaking my bike. I didn't have a helmet - this was before bike helmets became commonplace, 1985 or so. Ruined my whole summer vacation, it did. I was kind of disillusioned with biking for a while after that. Previously, I would ride for miles.
I finally got on a bike again about a year ago, when I was looking for an enjoyable way to get some exercise. Too bad my wife doesn't like it as much as I do - I was looking forward to sharing a hobby with her.

You let that stop you?? I went down the first time on aero bars, came very close to a broken wrist (spent a month in a brace), raced in a crit two days later, and a ITT the day after that (on aero bars). Ruined my favorite pair of shorts too...
Bump&Grind last season...that hurt for the next week...

I have an awesome collection of human bones, including a skull, they're all in pretty good condition, too. Nobody's ever said anything to me about not being allowed to keep them. They'd have a hard time getting them from me too, since they're inside my body.

You mean the train's wheel and one of the rails actually chopped your wheel in half? You were about twelve inces from a Darwin award, my friend! 
I don't have any notable recent biking wipeout tales, as I haven't been biking in a while and when I was most recently regularly biking, I tended to do pretty well in the staying upright and unscathed department.
I've got a story and pictures from an interesting rollerblading wipeout if anyone wants to see those, though.

Truthfuly, I couldnt really tell ya what hit the wheel, chain hanging off the train or a wheel but it was a nice shear slice and when I hti the ground it was quite painful but no visible injuries except the leg scrape.

Well, mostly it was the broken bike that stopped me - I couldn't afford to get another one *and* pay for the car that I wanted, so I just let it go. Wish I hadn't.

i war riding my bmx off jumps nd i started getting speed and then a t a point someone called my name, i turned around, the handlebars followed me. The weel went perpendicular to the rest of my bike and i flipped over. i badly scraped my elbow.Nothing much compared to some of you stories

I almost got nailed by some dickhead yuppie the other day, causing me to almost wipe out, but lucky for me, my superior biking skills manage to keep me upright, and since he went right into a red light, I was able to sit in front of him for about thirty seconds into the green light

I last weekend went out for a ride, and went down this trail that I have never rode before. I got up to this one huge puddle. Didn't look too deep and looked like the bottom of it was pretty firm enough to drive through.Well the puddle ended being almost 2 FT deep, the bottom was real mucky and I got to see it first hand. I got halfway through the puddle and then my tire got stuck in the mud, and I flipped over the bars. Didn't get injured from the fall, but it was so damn cold, especially on the ride back.

my roommate just recently fractured his collar bone. he was riding around on his bmx, the begs nicked the ground and the bike slid out from under him, resulting in him landing on his shoulder and cracking it. 6 weeks off work, wearing a brace. poor guy. hopefully he gets back on his bike when he's healed

I took a tree branch to the face a couple weeks ago... I got some small scrapes, but I didn't break anything. I guess it was more comical than anything.
lesson 1) ride on the street, not the sidewalk. especially if you're tall.
lesson 2) don't drink copious amounts of whiskey prior to biking on the sidewalk. keep it moderate.

I've had some close calls with foliage and signs recently on my freshly constructed tallbike. When your head is about 8 feet off the ground, you find yourself having to duck for a lot more stuff than usual...

I seem to remember hearing about someone who was killed in a tallbike accident, like the person fell off the bike into the path of a car or something, and that this ocurred in the Twin Cities. Have you heard of anything like that? It might just be one of those urban tallbike legends, I'm not sure...

My last was in May, 2002, on the Chicago lakefront path near 55th St.
I was on a short wheelbase recumbent (RANS Rocket), and my rear wheel got hooked on a raised concrete seam at about 17 MPH. WHAM! I got some beautiful road rash on the front of my left shin and the back of my left thigh, 47 miles from home as the bike flies. Nothing to do but break out the first aid kit, clean it up with alcohol wipes, put on the antibiotic ointment, bandage it, put on the sweat pants I had in my pack, and ride home.
The first few miles hurt like hell, then the endorphins kicked in, and soon I was at my usual pace. Then it was time for the shower.
OWWWWWWWWWWW!
It healed up surprisingly fast, with more Neosporin and non-stick dressings changed daily.

On a recently-acquired(xmas present) BMX bike that I was direly in need of, I was behind my house in gravel practicing barspins. Well, i had stood up, clamped the seat between my legs, and spun the bars the first time, successfully, and I went to go back, got held-up, and went face-first over the bike, into the ground. Bad balance, and lack of an effort to prevent myself from meeting gravel constitute to that.
Uh, yeah, then I was working on jamming my front tire and rolling backwards out of an indo. Misjudged speed by the weight of bike, in short, had the bike act as a swinging door. I went into the ground, bike on top of me.
... I've not biked in a month, haha.
