Mounting and riding was simple enough. Braking and dismounting were not!

This is my workhorse, a Cannondale M300 mountain bike. I've had her since 2006 when I bought her new for $379.00 and have commuted on it ever since. Bling includes a custom twisted laced front wheel with White industries hub and Paul brakes and levers. I estimate this bike has about 30,000 miles on it at this point!

This is my current ride, an old Azuki road bike converted to a fixie that I picked up for $60 off Craigslist. It is a temporary ride until I get enough money to build a totally custom fixie.

I don't understand why people don't have front brakes on their fixies. You don't actually have to use it, it is just nice to have there in case of emergencies when you REALLY need to stop.

Because it looks clean and projects an image. However, track bikes are not meant for regular street use.
Also, what's up with the headtube/downtube junction on that bike? Is that a gusset, or a ghetto weld repair (looks like the whole front end replaced)?

This bike was originally supposed to be a "BMX fixie" I guess, and that was part of the "BMX" design. It originally had a BMX type fork on it too, but whoever owned it before me put on the straight fork. It rides pretty nice though, and I like the look it has.
Here is a stock photo of what the bike would've been like originally.

Yup, its impractical, unsafe and selfish. My bikes are for riding trails and getting to work. I could care less about appearance.
I was reading a story about a bike shop owner back-east who was going down a steep hill on a non-brake fixie and he hit and killed an old lady. To cover his ass he put the shops name in a friends so they couldn't take it in the lawsuit. This is pretty much how I view the responsibility level of these turds.

Irresponsible? Yes, but no different from the legions of cyclists who go around with barely working brakes or other unsafe bicycle setups. There's relatively small risk involved for most sensible people, and we can't police everyone.
Now, those single-speed freewheel bikes with no brakes are another matter entirely...

I agree to a certain extent. The migrant and carless people who ride around on the walmart bikes don't really have much of a choice. Thankfully they are usually riding under 10mph as it seems to be their top speed on these clunkers.
I'm thinking more about the guys who wear beanies in the summer and always have their cell phones out ignoring the traffic laws that apply to us all. San Francisco is full of these twits struggling to get up the hills and falling all over the trolly tracks. Its entertaining and frustrating at the same time. I love the look on their faces as I'm powering past them up a hill because I use (gasp) proper gearing.

My classic Schwinn Varsity that I bought at Goodwill for $20, this bike has been to hell and back but it still keeps on going.
And an Azuki road bike that I ended up turning into a fixie and selling. It wasn't that great of a road bike.
