What do people here prefer to wear while riding their bicycles? In cold weather I usually ride in a jeans and a leather jacket. Who says you can’t be a biker dude just because your “hawg” doesn’t have an engine?

When riding I wear "normal" clothes--t-shirt, slacks, tennis shoes or boots. I don't have any "bike-specific" attire.
In the dead of winter I usually wear:
top: Wool sweater (or two) and a waterproof/ breathable shell.
bottom: Sometimes I'll wear nylon rain pants over my slacks or wool long-johns under my pants.
hands: Thick wool gloves
feet: Wool socks and heavy shoes/boots
head: Windproof ski-mask thing and sometimes safety goggles, which looks dorky but keeps the -20 degree windchill out of my eyeballs.
And, of course, a helmet.

I have about 5 pairs of windpants (for cross country skiing) that i'll wear over my normal clothes. If it's really cold, i'll wear longjohns and stuff. I'll wear my regular shoes, with a pair of battery operated socks, nice and toasty!
During the summer i'll wear a pair of Lycra bicycle shorts, and a pair of regular shorts over those (gotta keep the bum comfy)
oh, and i can't forget about my huge leather chopper mittens! (for winter, heh)

I just wear my normal clothes. When I'm in suit and it rains, I'll take the bus, otherwise I'll take the bike anyway.
The only "extra" clothing I have is a pair of leather gloves wor when it's cold and raining, and a pair of gloves for when it's freezing.
I've never worn a helmet, in the Netherlands no-one does and even the bike-association discourages them.

I'm curious as well.
I know some believe that wearing a helmet sort of gives you permission to ride like an idiot, as in "Oh, I can ride down this steep, ice-covered mountain road without my brakes and not worry about serious injury because I'm wearing a helmet!" I don't buy it, but some do.
There is also the belief that helmets discourage folks from riding a bike because nobody wants to wear a helmet (dorky-looking) and the fact that you "have to" wear a helmet makes cycling seem dangerous.
I personally don't take a hard line on helmets--do what you want, I say. But three years ago I was hit by a car, thrown off my bike, and skid about 10 feet head first. Luckily I was not seriously injured, just some scrapes and bruises, and I believe my helmet played a large role in keeping me safe. So there!

I agree. I've knocked myself out once while riding without a helmet. Big tree branch, head height, and me looking down. I awoke looking up at the world with starz floating by my head...heh.
I don't always wear a helmet, but the majority of the time i do, especially if i'm riding in really busy, congested areas, or unknown territory.

I unfortunately can't find that issue of the magazine anymore, it went something along the lines that in a normal fall (not an accident) it would do more damage than good, especially due to breaking of the cheakbone.

I just wear normal clothes - whatever is appropriate for the weather I am in. I usually add bike gloves (mostly because I like them) and a helmet (because I am adverse to having my head bashed in if some idiot runs into me).

this past season, i wore combat pants for biking, mainly because you can tie them up a bit if needed. and also they are cheap so if i do rip 'em to shit i dont really care.
plus a pair of Lizard Skin Kumoto(sp?) and a Protec Classic brain bucket.

-camo shorts (formerly camo pants I found in a laundromat, but they were like 6 inches too short. so I boxcutter'd them) if it's hot out, or jeans if it's colder out.
-a tshirt, with a hoodie or sweater over the top if it's cold out, and then an old air force field jacket with reflective tape on it that I have. if it's freezing balls out, I put the liner in the field jacket.
-messenger bag (mostly for the sake of having a place to put the hoodie/sweater/jacket if I get too warm).
-helmet. I already look really goofy, so I really don't stand to lose anything by wearing one.

Are you guys mostly just around town people, or do you participate in clubs? I know the guy above me does. I just bike for transportation, and so I'll wear whatever's appropriate for wherever I'm going.

I ride because I'm car-free, not as a hobby. My favorite clothes to ride in are Prana climbing pants and an Adidas soccer jersey.

Not that there's anything wrong with club riders--some of my beast friends do club rides, wear lycra, etc. They're good people. No, really, they are.

I bought a specialized enduro, I don't have any bike clothes, what should i wear so I dont look like a total asshole while riding trails?
