Back again with another drain review– first one in quite a while. This one is quite different than most that I've found here in this city, in that it's corrugated metal– also the first arched drain I've been in, as opposed to round or box drains.
Apologies for the low-quality photos. I don't like bringing my nice camera near the water, so the cell phone has to suffice, and unfortunately doesn't take the best photos in these lighting conditions. I'm hoping to find a solution for this so I can better document drains.
POE was simple, as long as I respected the the space of homeless folks near the mouth of the drain, it was easy to just walk right in. The roof probably clocks in at 8 or 9 feet– this is one of the larger drains here! Not too many that I've found could comfortably fit a human of any height (I'm quite privileged to be short–not having to crouch in 66" drains is fantastic).
Signs of human habitation continued for a little while, but surprisingly little graffiti– due, perhaps, to the corrugated walls. Not the best painting surface. A shopping cart laid, abandoned, just past the first curve. This was either dragged up the outfall, or had been washed down quite a long way, as I never encountered another entrance big enough for it to fit through.
These near-90 degree turns were frequent in the drain.
Some more interesting junk included a hot glue gun, various clothing articles, a neatly laid out pair of gloves, and the not-unusual piece of browned tinfoil (eugh). These signs of life didn't go on for long, though. within a couple hundred feet and a few twists and turns, all I saw was water and the usual road trash that gets swept along.
On I went. This drain is not terribly exciting in terms of divisions or features, but the fact that it's so different in its essentials is what kept me interested. Through my hour-long walk, I only encountered two manholes. The rest of the inlets were road grates, either set off to the side and connected by small pipes, or, more frequently, arranged symmetrically on the ceiling. The frequency of this variety was such that I didn't even need my light for several stretches of the drain.
The symmetrical ceiling grates were one of my favorite features. I haven't run into anything like this in other drains so far.
The pipes leading to the side grates were big enough to fit through. I took a little break lying beneath one of them and listening to neighborhood life going on around me.
These grates were quite fun. I found myself near parks, under people's cars, and in one case, right behind someone's house! The smell of a campfire and s'mores wafted through to me when I took a break beside one of them. Being underground, hidden from the world, and getting these tiny little peeks into life on the surface is such a unique feeling, and a huge part of why I do this.
My first time seeing the underside of a parked car from a drain, quite a cool perspective. I wish I had a way to leave a note for the owner that their transmission was leaking!
Outside of these elements which are so far, in my explorations, pretty unique, there wasn't too much excitement to speak on. The entire time I was inside I only encountered one offshoot big enough to explore, and it was not on the agenda that day to venture inside. Eventually I plan to venture up, though! Regrettably, I don't have any photos of this offshoot, just a video, which I don't believe I can post here. The only point where the structure of the drain changed was a small RCB section near one of the few manholes, which only went on for a few hundred feet or less. After this section, it transitioned to what I believe was a slightly shorter drain, but still easily allowing upright travel.
Two perspectives of the RCB section– beginning and end. There was more old graffiti around this stretch– some teens probably used to pop the nearby manhole for hangouts down here.
I did notice that the upward slope of this drain was a bit more pronounced than others I've been inside within the city. I'm unsure if this is to do with its location, its age (unknown, sadly), or just the way it's constructed, but I did find it an interesting note.
Beyond that, I sadly don't have much to share! Eventually I'd like to follow this drain through deeper, as I turned back an hour in due to not having spare batteries for my lights, and not having any food with me. This drain leaves me a lot more to explore and I'm excited to go back for a deeper dive.

It is indeed! I hadn't either, until now. Pretty cool seeing one that's so different, I just can't help but to wonder why it's so different– if it's older than the concrete drains common now, or some other reason.

So I'm not the only one to explore it, good to know! It's a pretty sweet location. How deep inside have you gotten? I've gone at least a mile in but I really want to know just how far it goes. Might have to bring my bike down with me sometime to speed it up, lol.

Very nice! I've never seen a CMP tunnel that turns into an octagon tunnel! That's awesome! I've also never seen a big grate like you have here! Great work! Keep it up!
