The other day I went to Canadian Tire, and saw this older couple in a new Porsche electric. They were sitting at the new charging station in the parking lot. When I left there were still sitting there. About and hour later I saw them sitting there. What is the point?

I see people doing road trips, and they are sitting at a Tim Hortons that happens to have a charging station. I rather be moving. What a waste of time.

Regarding the Honda 1.3. I had a 1.6 single cam 98 coupe, and I got fantastic mileage running. Plus it was fun.

I had a 1988 1.6 AWD Civic Wagon that got 36-40mpg, depending on how hard you beat the snot out of it. That thing was an absolute BLAST, especially in the winter with dedicated snow tires. It was unstoppable. Dump the clutch in 8" of snow, it lit all 4 wheels, dropped down to the pavement, and left the line like it was shot out of a cannon. It wasn't a fast car by any means, but in the snow it felt like a rocket ship. I've owned other AWD, and 4WD, but none have ever compared to that ugly little beast in term of winter traction, and not even CLOSE to MPG....

Those are awesome cars, I have not seen any of those running around for a long time.

I dont know what charging infrastructure is in ontario (was there often pre pandemic but never really looked at it) but here in quebec Hydro Quebec has installed a lot of DC fast charge stations. all are equipped with CCS type 1 and CHADEMO, so you can charge a volt or a bolt in a half hour, to almost full. My friend recently drove her Leaf to toronto in about 6 hours from montreal. 1 charge stop.

Myself i picked up a Fusion Energi after i got rid of the hybrid. Montreal has TONNES of level 2 street chargers. 1$ an hour for a charge... and parking is free vs the usuary meter rates.

i pay a bit over 1$ to drive 100km on electricity, gas, with the price these days is 12$ for the same distance.

My fusion has a 45km range on electric, so for my daily commute the gas engine never starts, im running a 15 amp level 2 charger in my driveway (the car cant handle more than 16 amps) so it takes about 2.5 hours to recharge. This works out great, and mondays, i have class in the evening so after work drive into the city, park at a charger in front of the university charge while in class and drive home.

If that fits your needs, then that is great.
But you are really bound to major metropolis'.
I like to get out, off the beaten track. I have never run out of gas, but it could happen. In that scenario someone can bring me gas.

If Honda inverter generators ever come down in price (ha), you could just keep one in the trunk for emergencies.

I am also a card carrying member of the "fuck electric cars" club, and yes, I do live in a rural area and drive a lot. The technology has a long way to go before they're going to work in areas like this.

A friend bought an e-Golf and she can't do her total commute to and from work if she uses the heater. Range goes down to about 30% of what was advertised on cold days.

I have the Fusion, the battery isnt huge, so in perfect weather 45km, but in hybrid mode i get just north of 1000km on a tank. So its the best of both worlds. My kia Optima hybrid sorta sold me on hybrids. Like i said before, with quebecs dirt cheap electricity and the massive installed charger infrastructure here you see a HELL of a lot of green plates. They have also sweetened the pot, electric cars are allowed to use the HOV lanes around MTL, the 2 toll bridges are free as well
