1. Late last year I visited an abandoned neighbourhood as demolition was picking up speed, and met this creature in a parking garage:
2. I returned a few months later, and she was still there, but someone had let her out of the case.
3. She showed me around a bit.
4. At the time she didn't want to go any farther than this point.

6. I left her in a windowsill, safe from the rain or snow.
7. I returned a few days later, but her home was too moldy.
8. So she took me up to the roof.

10. This is how the area appears.
11. In another direction, they've cleared out all the buildings and are preparing to dig out the earth. This place is just downhill of a university.
12. We went out for a closer look at the demolition field.

14. If you're wondering, she is the size of a regular human. Here she is standing next to my friend, who's a professor at the university (which is seen behind them).
15. She showed me to the washroom.
16. Then she hopped into bed.
17. She showed me her rebar collection.
18. My friends wanted to get closer to the demolition equipment.

After, I escorted her back to her home. It's probably all been destroyed since then.

There's a fence...sort of. It's basically a yellow tarp hanging from metal bars. Hardly security, just a courtesy blind so people don't have to look at the demolition. There are very few people here motivated to look behind the curtain.
Note that in picture 11, you can see the fence all around the area, and even cutting through the middle where there's a still-active road.
Here's another picture showing the road, where you can see one of my friends hiding from a bus:
You can see part of it in this picture. It's not really secured to the building, so we just squeezed our way around it. I knew at least three other equally easy ways in and out.

Here's another place where you could probably find an opening. The bank on the left was still active though.
This was one of the access points in my November visit, before demolition got going. It was left open so students could still walk through to get to the university.
In Canada, when new housing is needed they just go to the edge of town and build on empty land. I've never heard of large-scale urban renewal being done there, except maybe to expand airports.
