Restoration anyone?

Are you tired of seeing the buildings that you love disintegrate and be demolished?

How often have you, or someone you knew, looked at one of those buildings and say "That is such a shame" or something similar?

If there was something you could do to stop it from happening would you?

I am looking to see if there is any interest from my fellow members, and non-members, on here to possibly restore some of these gems.

Currently, living just outside of Philadelphia and in process of restoring and old mansion in NE PA so I have a range of areas, at this point. I am always looking for other projects outside the area if there is enough interest (I have looked at some beautiful homes in upstate NY for restoration).

My wife and I have recently started an arts based incubator and marketing company and most of these buildings are perfect for artists, photographers, etc.

After all, that is why we are all here right?

I am looking for properties of interest and like-minded people that want to help bring these buildings back to life for everyone to enjoy.

The only requirement from me is that you have the desire to take back these beautiful properties from the wrecking ball and turn back the hands of time and make them functional and sustainable for everyone.

You can message me here if you are interested.

I'm not the fixing-up type, but I am in contact with some preservationists who do restoration work on heritage buildings. A few of my friends live in old Korean houses that would probably be abandoned or wrecked in some other way if it weren't for them, and some of these friends have gone exploring with me. It definitely is nice to see old buildings saved from the brink and get another lease on life.

I find that a lack of funds, depending on the project, really doesn't limit it.

I had worked on a project in which we would have needed $60 million to do environmental remediation and restoration of the property. I was 23, obviously did not have that kind of money. I was able to work with others to make the entire project happen, financially, and was stopped by the local municipality because they had their own agenda.

From that experience, I have learned that you need to make these projects bigger than the properties themselves.

The whole reason I have come here is to gather the interest in these properties to make them bigger than the people that limit them in the first place and allow them to get to these points.

Tell me we don't look at these buildings and say, even if to ourselves, "That would be a great (blank)!".

I'm down in Virginia and have experience in historic preservation. Would love a project. No qualms in traveling to Philly EVER.

I'm also handy with power tools, great at grant writing, and passionate about architecture.

PM me anytime.

I know that it's a labour of love to begin with, but it's fortunate you're able to overcome those obstacles at all, even if it takes time. Maybe its different in southern Ontario where things are arguably getting a bit more crowded, but it always feels like if a property is in an attainable price range or within your reach through other means, its because everyone else with more resources than you wrote it off.

Sorry if I sound jaded haha, I've been searching for a quiet slice of land for my wife and I in Northern Ontario in the 50-75k range for a couple of years and no dice- come close, but it always seems like right before putting in an offer the realtor says "oh, by the way theres an EP hold over 95% of the property" or "by the way, no additional structures can be built and the current crumbling building cant be demolished or added onto without a biblical amount of money to the municipality and paperwork".

I used to really want to put my heart into flipping little abandoned structures, or even investment properties for sale [flippings probably the wrong word, i mean to keep not to resell immediately] but damn do they make it hard on you. I know its probably for the best, all the safety regulations and bureaucratic red tape, but man they sure do make it hard for you to make any positive difference.

I will have some time I could donate my labor starting in the spring. Both my house in West Virginia and my house in Massachusetts are 6 hours from the Philly area so its really not too far from me regardless of where I am at.

....and my wife would appreciate getting me out of the house for a while
