Train in a tunnel. Yeah the light at the end of the tunnel was a freight train.

Wow, that's both amusing and terrifying!

Stumbled on a black bear mom and two cubs while sneaking to an abandoned house in northern bc a few years ago... We surprised them turning around some brush and the mom stood up on her backleg. We instantly stopped and backed slowly while speaking softly and everything went well. It is usual to see bear from time to time in that area but this was and still is the closest contact ive had with a family. Black bear are fairly dangerous and scary but they are usually really chill. I dont know what would have happened with a grizzly though.

A rotten rooftop. A few steps on and my leg went right through (being 6'6 290 will do it to ya.). As soon as I pulled myself up I crawled across the roof to try to evenly distribute my weight. other than a couple scrapes and being itchy from the fiberglass, I was aight. Pro tip, don't get on a rooftop ;)

Not very exciting but definately led me to upgrade my foot protection.

And wear a mask!

Fuck yeah they count mate. I've had one similar to your experience.

I stumbled into a meth hotel. The place was an old scrap yard facility or something in Fort Worth. My buddy and I were walking around scouting for places to explore in the area and thought the huge abandoned building would be nice to check out. Wrong. As soon as we entered a huge warning sign hit us, and it was the smell of human piss and shit. Should have turned back right there and then, but we went a little further in. Not even 15 feet inside yet we were met by some scrawny fella with missing teeth holding a set of pliers just staring at us. I broke the silence and made some small talk with him and he told us about the building and how it was full of a lot of druggies shooting up. The dude of course asked if we had any change... so we promptly said no and took our leave.

Learned an important lesson that day. Smell piss or shit, and someone or something is probably nearby.

Holy shit that is nuts. Sorry for late reply. I recently found a huge train workshop compound and its just like that, most of them are cool but would only go at night with a good-sized group. This location you see either the tents, or piles of refuse. One guy has a nice setup and ran a solar panel cord into one of the rooms lol! this dude has electricity in his squat.

Found some biowaste last week in an old nursing home. Ten years of abandonment and exposure to Midwest winters probably killed anything dangerous there, but considering it's full of used needles I'm gonna count as dangerous it anyway.

Found a lot of used needles on the ground outside an old warehouse in New England. Didn't see them until I also happened to step on the pile of unopened Hillshire sausages right next to them that had rotten into a meat smoothie and I had a Looney-Tunes worthy slip and fall, my arm slamming on the ground literally inches away from them. Hop skip and a jump away from catching some bloodborne disease.

Also found a boat load of old dynamite inside an abandoned slate quarry. Probably was okay to be around, it was over half a decade old but I didn't wanna take any chances.

Also trotted around one of the largest (now a toxic waste site!) abandoned asbestos mines in the country, when I was considerably younger and had absolutely zero common sense about the danger of asbestos. That's probably the most dangerous thing I've found honestly!

NO. The specifics of this are more up the alley of explorers who do a lot of mines like Abby Normal, but from my understanding dynamite tends to destabilize with age. In some cases the nitroglycerin can "sweat" out of the sticks and form crystals. This is especially dangerous because inside the stick, the nitroglycerin is mixed with sawdust to stabilize it- but once it separates out from the sawdust and forms the crystals it's extremely unstable.

Holy moly, well I guess that's some pretty good information to know--the place got sealed up a few years back for "hazardous cleanup", so I'm assuming some of that dynamite was on the list. Good thing I noped right out of that area too--could've left without a leg. Or two. Or not left at all.

You got me. I've been Blackhawk all along and have just been arguing with myself online because I've got nothing better to do. After all, Blackhawk is the only one on the entire internet who maybe knows a thing or two about urbex, right?

Nobody else does anything for a living, been exposed to fields outside of immediate work, have any expertise in any hobbies/interests, nor have anyone merely watched episode 24 of "Lost".

Do you see Blackhawk in your toast too?

I may not be an professional chemist, but I have read a wikipedia article or two. I know the idea of basic research is pretty foreign to a natural-born expert in literally everything under the sun like yourself.

I didn't find anything too dangerous, but I have a story on this topic.

About 10 years ago I was visiting family in Poland. My cousin and I decided to go in the woods near the town to explore some abandoned bunkers from the second world war. It was fun to see the remains of a piece of history, but a few weeks later, we seen on the news that an older man was walking his dog in the woods not too far from where we were exploring, the dog has stepped on a land mine and exploded. Poor man lost his dog that day. The military locked down the area to search for any other possible mines. I've came back to Canada before everything was over so I'm not sure if they found other explosives.

This used to happen from time to time in the US where a lot of state parks are on former military installations.

I remember Tobyhanna State Park had signs up warning you about UXOs. Part of what is now Tobyhanna State Park was an artillery range for the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

Very much this. The only thing you might have going for you is that nitroglycerin is water soluble, so if the stick is in a wet location the crystals that form will likely dissolve. But I certainly would not bank on that... best to treat any explosive as a live explosive.
