The Cotton Mill

This mill in northeastern Connecticut was built in 1825, processing cotton and making yarn until it was abandoned sometime after 1973.
Nobody knows exactly when it was abandoned, but like a lot of these old mills, it probably happened in stages with some parts of the building abandoned a lot longer than others.

01: Exterior
Camera facing east

02: Hatches

03: Hell Hole
The floor here was made of concrete over wood. Now it's made of air.

04: Windows n Stuff

05: Glass

06: The Oddest Stuff
It's amazing the random crap that collects in old mills. The other half of this tanning bed was halfway across the building.

07: Bob Had Bitch Tits

08: Quonset Hut
A giant one, and there's another floor below this.

09: Through

10: Second Floor
In some places, steel beams were added later. Either to shore up the building, mount hoists, make more floor space, or all of the above.

11: Fire Escape

12: Window
The roof on this corner blew off.

13: 2-Ton
The third floor.

14: Cotton
A little left over from the massive amount that got processed here.

15: Toob

16: The Basement

17: Built Like A
This is one skookum tank.

18: Hydraulic Pump
This big pump still moved smoothly after sitting still for lord knows how long. It demanded to be spun, so we spun it.

19: Turbine Room Floor
This room was a death trap. Under this floor it's like 15 feet down to a pit of dark water.

20: Rubble
Under all that rubble, there's two turbines.

21: Turbine
There's only one spot in the room where it's still possible to get underneath. There are two turbines like this one, awkwardly crammed in here around the stone at different heights and angles.

22: Yarn
Clumps of this stuff were all over the place, but the yarn protected by this little arch still had its colors.

23: The Dam
The dam was about a quarter mile north of the mill. The headrace here is totally underground and I can't see where it ever would have connected to the pond.

This was an interesting place and there's still more I have yet to see. There will definitely be a return trip.
Thanks for looking.

Really cool shots, I love the gif of the pump being moved. Awesome bonus that there's not much graffiti either.

Cool shots. That's about the oldest abandoned mill I ever heard of.

yep, it's the oldest mill building I've been to. Not too much different in construction from mills from the 1840s-1890s though.
We later found a 1990 elevator inspection certificate and some redevelopment plans from 2005-06, which gives half an idea when it was abandoned. Most of the building is in great shape for its age and how long it's been sitting empty.

These are great shots. I have been to this mill three times but that shitty floor over the mill race really scared me. So I never got close enough to look for the turbines. Now that I know it is possible to get down there I am going to have to go back.

Barely possible. I squeezed down between the floorboards and rubble along the south wall of the turbine room (at the right of photo 20).
But it's really only that one spot you can get to, there's no wide open space underneath the floor. It's a cramped mess of turbines, stone, pipe, brick, and rubble.
They really squeezed those turbines in, probably upgraded from a waterwheel that used to be in that same space.
