I'm just curious if there is anyone else out there who commonly downloads movies for testing purposes only ?

I'd like to discuss this subject, but don't want it on the public searchable forums. I'll have to PM AV, and see if these public subscribable boards get indexed by search engines. Anyway with all the new things you can do with technology, I'd thought it be cool to keep up on it here, instead of having to sift through so many other forums for answers. So post all you know on the subject, or speak up so we can know who to ask questions.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to convert a PAL DVD .img file into a NTSC one? I haven't finished extracting or burning the image yet, so I haven't actually tested it, but from what I've gathered on the net about my specific DVD player($70 Pioneer DV-250 from Wal-Mart) is that I should expect black and white or distorted picture if I try to play it as is. I will be able to play it on my computer so that's not a problem for me, but I'd like to be able to let people barrow it and watch it on their DVD player.

Any help will be appreciated.

This is the A/V Club afterall, gotta have those nerdy threads going on!

DVD comes in different flavours? I thought NTSC and PAL were moot with DVD's.

I know DVD has an insideous continental consumer-screw otpion. If you play your North Amerian made DVD, then play a European or Asian made DVD and switch back between them only a few times, your player will lock and you'll have to take it in for servicing, which entailed the technician to flick one little switch inside and charge way too much to do it... but I didn't know there were different playback formats.

I actually got it to work. Plays with a bit of a flicker but otherwise it is watchable. There is a whole lot of information on hacking DVD players to be region free and whatnot, plus some of the cheaper APEX models you can upgrade the firmware and do some sweet stuff. Most of what they tell you is the same stuff a technician will do so be sure to check around before you pay any money. Some hacks require a palmpilot or other PDA or laptop with an IR port to run codes throught the players remote control IR port. A search for "Hacks <your dvd player make and model number here>" should yeild results. Some stuff is just small files burnt to a cd that your player will read as an upgrade .rom and then it will flash the EPROM and install the new firmware. It seems like I learn how to hack or modify a new thing everyday! It really is bringing many old and seemingly useless electronics out of the closet, like my old crappy RCA Lyra MP3 player.

But good to know I can play PAL DVD-R's as that's what most of them are on suprnova.org.

It's crummy yahoo groups I know, but they have some good information and links to stuff on the Lyra. The files section has several little programs to do things on the lyra that always irritated me, like album sequence getting messed up and not being able to play true .mp3 files, (still can't do that, but they recommend a program that converts .mp3 to .wma without using Windows Media Player.) I bought a 512 mb CF card for it and now I take it everywhere I go. But I am thinking of buying an iPod sometime soon.

Yea, iPods are sweet. I have a third generation 40gig one and I wouldn't go without it. You should get one!

Cool. I tried putting a 256M CF card in mine and it always locked up. Very annoying. Mine does seem to play some mp3 files, but it does say a lot of mp3's are invalid which is annoying. At least I got mine for only like $40.

There are certain brands of CF that don't work, I read up and I got the only 512 that was said to work on the Lyra. I have problems with some songs that were encoded at higher bitrates stuttering, it's very annoying.
