Weymouth Incinerator - Photo heavy

This is the same one Remy77 posted; nothing special for my first post. The incinerator is in a fancy public park and it's clearly a townie hangout spot, so the total absence of cameras and alarms was a welcome surprise. (But avoid the telecom gear in front!)

The history:
This was built in 1965 and decommissioned in 1976 under the newly passed Clean Air Act -- Before the town had paid off the 1.2m construction cost.

Having seen only burn barrels up close, I was struck by the facilty's complexity. This abstract from a municipal waste journal (?) explains it a bit.

If you end up here, take some time to watch the birds. I saw three nesting pairs of osprey! Plus, birdwatching is always good cover if you've got binoculars and white skin. Barn owls nest in abandoned buildings over May-August and they are active at night

The site:

For reference, the "lowest floor" is at ground level here with the garage doors. There are 4 levels: 3 of machinery spanning the height of the building, and a mezzanine reserved for human matters. More on this later.

This is the "middle floor." Old machinery is everywhere -- Lots of chipper/shredders, a few tractors, a few concrete mixers, and a generator. In the back you can see 2 large compactor shafts, which descend to the lower floor.

(the shaft)

Nice of them to be so clear in their labeling. With the hazardous waste segregated in this corner, we must assume the rest of the site to be totally clean.

There are 2 separate incinerator chambers. My camera lens doesn't really do it justice.

(from the mezzanine)

Looking into the incinerator on the middle floor - Seems like stuff burns here, and ash falls down to the floor below.

And here's the base of the incinerators. Presumably this is where the heavy ash was removed.

Separated from the incinerator base by a little tunnel, we find the room with the garage doors visible in the first outside photo. It's filled with machinery -- Chipper-shredders, several camper-trailers, etc.

And here we see the bottom of the compactor shafts with the little green plant from the photo above

Next we ascend to the mezzanine, which has only offices and other humanish stuff

Seems pretty fresh.

Finally, we ascend to the top level. We can see here the top of the incinerators (the shaft in the foreground), and a crane which presumably loads trash into them.

...And one final shot of the first room from the top.

The toxic hazardous waste photo was very nice, the 'less-fresh' hazardous waste.
I wonder what was in those barrels.

For anyone looking at this spot, me and a buddy just went today, and the building has been completely flattened. Looks like the land is going to become part of the nearby apartment complex construction.
